2014 acaba de raiar, e estou, numa tarde fria e chuvosa, na Piazza della Signoriaem Florença, olhando para a placa redonda, no piso – ignorada pelas legiões de turistas chineses – que assinala o local onde foi enforcado e queimado o monge Savonarola, dia 23/5/1498, condenado por conspirar contra a RepúblicaFlorentina.   Mas estou pensando – e como não pensaria? – em Maquiavel. Naquele dia fatídico, Maquiavel tinha apenas 29 anos. Estaria em pé, a alguns passos de onde estou. O que estaria pensando?    Girolamo SavonarolaMaquiavel viu como Savonarola, popular pregador dominicano, fora saudado como salvador da República: re-escrevera a Constituição, para dar poder à classe média. Querem saber? Não haveria então movimento (a favor do povo) mais arriscado e perigoso que aquele. Aliou Florença à França. Mas não teve como resistir, quando o papa Alexandre VI, pró-Espanha, impôs terríveis sanções econômicas que feriram fundo a classe dos mercadores florentinos (antecipação, séculos antes, das sanções dos EUA contra os bazaaris iranianos).   Savonarola também regeu a fogueira das vaidades original, cuja pirâmide flamejante incluía perucas, potes de rouge, perfumes, livros com poemas de Ovídio, Bocage e Petrarca, bustos e pinturas de temas “profanos” (até – horror dos horrores – alguns de Botticelli), cítaras, violas, flautas, esculturas de mulheres nuas, figuras de deuses gregos e, cúmulo dos cúmulos, uma efígie de Satã.   No final, os florentinos cansaram-se das lições de puritanismo linha dura de Savonarola – e uma sentença sombria da Inquisição papal selou o negócio. Quase vejo Maquiavel, o famoso sorriso enviesado – enquanto a fogueira ardia, exatamente um ano antes, no mesmo local onde Savonarola arderia depois em chamas. O veredito: não há lugar para realpolitik, numa “democracia” comandada por Deus. Deus, por falar dele, nem mudava coisa alguma. Só anatureza humana é capaz de decidir de que modo sopram os ventos; na direção da liberdade ou na direção da servidão.
