General Hafter announces coup; politicians react with scorn, order his arrest

General Hafter announces coup; politicians react with scorn, order his arrest | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
By Ashraf Abdul-Wahab. Tripoli, 14 February 2014:  General Khalifa Hafter, who is nominally in charge of land forces but in reality without any military power, announced a coup d’etat on TV this morning. Speaking to Al-Arabiya channel in the name of what he said was the Libyan Republican Alliance, he announced that he had suspended the General National Congress, the government and the Constitutional Declaration, and that his forces were in Tripoli. He later said that it was not a coup d'etat as such but "a correction to the path of the revolution'. The Saudi-backed TV station added that communications and the internet had been cut in the capital.   Neither statements were remotely true. The internet was working with its usual slowness  and other communications were normal. Libya Herald reporters went to the Congress buildings and the Prime Minister’s office and found no unusual activity. There were no checkpoints and no extra security guards. The only [...]

Libya Killing Spree Terrorises Citizens

Libya Killing Spree Terrorises Citizens | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

Benghazi — Unknown assassins settling scores, extremists out to make a point, military wings of political blocks eliminating rivals and outlaw gangs killing for profit are leaving a bloody trail from Derna to Benghazi. And citizens say the government appears unable to stop it.

The latest victim of a targeted assassination was a former policeman. On Monday (February 10th), Montasser Anwar Bennaser had just dropped off his son at school in Derna when a bomb exploded under his car.

A day earlier in nearby Karsa beach, a corpse was found tied to a large rock, with its feet and hands bound. Saiqa Special Forces member Alaa Mohammad Ali had disappeared a month ago after returning to Derna from Benghazi.

Former Libyan Attorney-General and Supreme Court Chancellor Abdul Aziz al-Hassadi was shot dead in the Derna city centre on Saturday.

The bloody week-end began with the assassination of a Benghazi imam. Cheikh Atef Madouli was gunned down after Asr prayers at al-Ansari mosque, in the city's Hadaiq district.

PROPAGANDA ALERT »» Twelve days in hell How I played basketball for Gaddafi and almost died #SHAME #LIAR

PROPAGANDA ALERT »» Twelve days in hell How I played basketball for Gaddafi and almost died #SHAME #LIAR | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Quociente Cultural 's insight:

" PROPAGANDA ALERT:Someone explain to me how the media expects us to accept this “witness account” narrative which openly boasts various geopolitical errors. (1) Alex Owumi claims to have witnessed the Libyan Air Force bombing Benghazi to subjugate it. The Russian military monitoring from space has confirmed these “airstrikes” never happened: http://rt.com/news/airstrikes-libya-russian-military/

(2) For those who dismiss the testimony of the Russian military, it should be noted as researcher Maximilian Forte has documented that in a Pentagon press conference, when asked: “Do you see any evidence that he [Gaddafi] actually has fired on his own people from the air? There were reports of it, but do you have independent confirmation? If so, to what extent?” U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates replied, “We’ve seen the press reports, but we have no confirmation of that”. Backing him up was Admiral Mullen: “That’s correct. We’ve seen no confirmation whatsoever”.: http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/08/31/the-top-ten-myths-in-the-war-against-libya/

(3) Furthermore, Tony Cartalucci notes, “ During a particularly frank, pre-UNSC r.1973, International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)military briefing, Qaddafi's military was identified as two professional forces divided into eastern and western brigades of approximately 10,000 men in total. IISS analysts would go on to refute claims that Qaddafi was intentionally targeting civilians noting that by doing so, he would only be fueling efforts by the West to use military force against him (16:26 & 1:00:00). When asked about mercenaries (53:00), the IISS conceded to having no credible evidence.”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5AEEbuV8Hg

(4) Alex Owumi peddles the narrative of “Gaddafi’s rapist soldiers.” This claim was shown as baseless by both Amnesty International and the United Nations’ Cherif Bassiouni who failed to find concrete, documented evidence for a policy of rape on Gaddafi’s part: http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/08/31/the-top-ten-myths-in-the-war-against-libya/

(5) Owumi ignores the broader geopolitical ambitions at play, specifically the western financing of the armed militancy in Libya which was armed from the beginning going back to the 1980s and boasting tacit western support for Islamist militantism as a tool against Gaddafi: http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2011/05/libya-at-any-cost.html

(6) If the war in Libya was merely one-sided, how did “peaceful protestors” manage to storm and destroy a reinforced military base in Benghazi. This doesn’t happen spontaneously: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7-3wbyN_Ns

(7) The fact that, as Dr. Webster Tarpley points out, the city council of Darnah, Libya was dominated by Al Qaeda fanatics is and associates of Bin Laden such as Sufian Bin Kummu and LIFG devotees like Al-Barrani is a fact overlooked by Owumi’s one-sided portrayal: http://tarpley.net/2011/04/03/al-qaeda-pawns-of-cia-insurrection-from-libya-to-yemen/

(8) It is a DOCUMENTED FACT that Al Qaeda was a driving force among the Libyan uprising’s center of operations in Cyrenaica according even to US military researchers in 2008 who would go into damage control in 2011: http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2011/09/west-point-terror-center-confirms-al.html

I’m not saying that ALL the rebels were Al Qaeda but clearly Al Qaeda was prominent enough for Abdel Hakim Belhadj to become “supreme military commander” of Tripoli and a leading figure in the insurgency. Could it be that the US has been financing such elements as far back as 1980s? YES! Why doesn't the media ever put this in perspective "

The new US-Russia Cold Wa By Pepe Escobar

The new US-Russia Cold Wa By Pepe Escobar | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

Meet the new (cold) war, same as the old (cold) war. Same same, but different. One day, it's the myriad implications of Washington's "pivoting" to Asia - as in the containment of China. The next day, it's the perennial attempt to box Russia in. Never a dull moment in the New Great Game in Eurasia.

On Russia, the denigration of all things Sochi - attributable to the inherent stupidity of Western corporate media "standards" - was

just a subplot of the main show, which always gets personal; the relentless demonization of Russian President Vladimir Putin. [1]

Yet Nulandgate - as in US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria "neo-con" Nuland uttering her famous "F**k the EU" - was way more serious. Not because of the "profanity" (praise the Lord!), but for providing what US Think Tankland hailed as "an indicator of American strategic thinking".

Here's the game in a nutshell. Germany remote controls one of the leaders of the Ukrainian protests, heavyweight boxer Vitali Klitschko. [2]

"F**k the EU" is essentially directed towards Berlin and Klitschko, its key protege. Washington sees this going nowhere, as Germany, after all, has been slowly building a complex energy-investment partnership with Russia.
