By Ashraf Abdul Wahab. Tripoli, 27 May 2014: The home of Prime Minister Ahmed Maetig in Tripoli was attacked last night with RPGs. A source close to Maetig told the Libya Herald that assailants fired two grenades at the house, in the capital’s Hay Al-Andalus area, at around 5 o’clock this morning. Maetig and his family were in the house at the time of the attack, he said. There have been unconfirmed reports that one of the attackers was killed and another injured in clashes with Maetig’s security team. irst the Obamas and now David Cameron have been photographed holding up that ceaselessly tweeted placard saying ‘#BringBackOurGirls’. Now all we need is for Nicolas Sarkozy to come out of retirement and do likewise and then all of the key invaders of Libya in 2011 will have registered their watery-eyed angst with Boko Haram, the Nigeria-based Islamist group that kidnapped 276 girls from a school in Chibok in north-east Nigeria, the ‘our girls’ referred to in that ubiquitous hashtag. Which would be profoundly ironic given that nothing boosted Boko Haram’s fortunes so much as the West’s assault on Libya in 2011. It was that vain bombing war, that Western-led dismantling of a regime that cohered Libya and its border regions for 40-plus years, which created new spaces in West Africa in which Boko Haram could train, get hold of weaponry and, in the words of one Nigerian observer, become more ‘audacious’ than ever. The Western politicians and hacks now expressing heartbreak over Boko Haram’s barbarism are the same ones whose urge to intervene in Libya provided Boko Haram with new forums in which to hone that barbarism.

ICC Appeals Chamber confirms the admissibility before the ICC of the case against Saif-Al-Islam Gaddafi

ICC Appeals Chamber confirms the admissibility before the ICC of the case against Saif-Al-Islam Gaddafi | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

Today, 21 May 2014, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) delivered its judgment confirming the decision of the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I declaring admissible the case against Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi. The Appeals Chamber's judgment was issued by majority, with a separate concurring opinion by Judge Sang-Hyun Song. Judge Anita Ušacka adopted a dissenting opinion. On 31 May 2013, Pre-Trial Chamber I had rejected Libya's challenge to the admissibility of the case against Saif Al Islam Gaddafi and reminded Libya of its obligation to surrender the suspect to the Court. Libya appealed this decision on 7 June 2013. According to article 17 (1) (a) of the Rome Statute, a case is inadmissible before the Court where the same case is being investigated or prosecuted by a State which has jurisdiction over it, unless the State is unable or unwilling genuinely to carry out the investigation or prosecution

New civil war in Libya as Benghazi probe begins

New civil war in Libya as Benghazi probe begins | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

A new civil war in Libya is heating up just as the House select committee investigating the Obama administration’s handling of the 2012 terror attack in Benghazi prepares to launch.

Once again, Benghazi is at the epicenter of an emerging revolutionary movement in Libya in which suspected CIA-backed mercenaries posing as “freedom-fighting revolutionaries” are attempting to seize power from the provisional government established by the United States and NATO after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi.

Libyan tribes claiming to represent 5 million Libyan citizens went public Wednesday with charges against the Obama administration. They claim the U.S. is continuing to sponsor al-Qaida related Islamic extremists responsible for launching the terrorist attack on the U.S. facilities in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens on Sept. 11, 2012.

Sex, lies and a bunch of lawyers
By Pepe Escobar

So the ultimate politico-economic-media earthquake of the young 21st century remains the (poisonous) gift that keeps on giving. What a raw nerve Abel Ferrara, of King of New York and Bad Lieutenant fame, has now been able to strike.

An "outraged" Dominique Strauss-Kahn, aka DSK, is going to sue the producers of Welcome to New York, the movie inspired by the epic 2011 scandal that effectively terminated his career as head of the International Monetary Fund and possible future president of France.

The beauty of it is that Ferrara's soft porn spectacular is no more

than a "fictionalized version"; "Devereaux" (Gerard Depardieu) stands for fallen Master of the Universe DSK and "Simone" (Jacqueline Bisset) for his multi-millionairess wife Anne Sinclair. Still, DSK's lawyerly bunch has been adamant in reminding Ferrara that their client was duly cleared by the US justice system of the charge of sexual aggression on a Guinean employee of the Sofitel New York in 2011.

Harvard Book Store welcomed political commentators Glenn Greenwald and Noam Chomsky for a discussion of Greenwald's latest book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State.

For the first time, Greenwald fits all the pieces together, recounting his high-intensity eleven-day trip to Hong Kong, examining the broader implications of the surveillance detailed in his reporting for The Guardian, and revealing fresh information on the NSA's unprecedented abuse of power with never-before-seen documents entrusted to him by Snowden himself.

Who Is Libya’s Rogue General Battling Benghazi Islamists? [CIA Puppet]

Libya’s rogue general Khalifa Haftar, who was preparing an offensive against Islamist groups in the country’s restive east, is a former rebel commander accused by Tripoli of staging a coup.

Gen Haftar unleashed his so-called National Army on Friday against groups he called “terrorists” in Benghazi, Libya’s second city and the hotbed of an Islamist militancy, killing at least 79 people and wounding 141 others.

The attack, backed by warplanes and helicopters, sparked outrage. Tripoli denounced the 71-year-old as an “outlaw” seeking to take advantage of the unrest in the country to mount a coup.
