'Me or terrorists?' Furious Erdogan tells US to choose between Turkey and Syrian Kurds #WEStandByKurds

'Me or terrorists?' Furious Erdogan tells US to choose between Turkey and Syrian Kurds #WEStandByKurds | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Riled by a meeting between a US official and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which controls the Syrian town of Kobane, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told Washington to choose between Turkey and, as he put it, the “terrorists.”

A delegation featuring Brett McGurk, the United States' envoy to the coalition it leads against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), met the YPG over the last weekend in January. The YPG took full control of Kobane late last June, in what was a powerful symbol of Kurdish resistance.

"He [Brett McGurk] visits Kobane at the time of the Geneva talks and is awarded a plaque by a so-called YPG general?" Erdogan told reporters on his plane while returning from a trip to Latin America and Senegal, the Beser Haber newspaper reported.

"How can we trust [you]?" Erdogan said.

"Is it me who is your partner, or the terrorists in Kobane?" the Turkish president said, adding that both the PYD and the YPG are "terrorist organizations." Ankara considers them to be part of the PKK, banned in Turkey as a terrorist group.

According to US officials, the trip appeared to be the first of its kind to northern Syria since 2013. It took place after the YPG's political wing, Syria’s Democratic Union Party (PYD), was excluded from new peace talks in Geneva. Ankara had threatened to boycott the talks if the PYD were invited.

The conflict between the Turkish government and Kurdish insurgent groups demanding greater autonomy for the large ethnic group has been continuing for decades. With several failed ceasefires between the sides, Ankara has been blamed by a number of human rights groups for putting civilian lives at risk in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast.

In August, Ankara launched a ground operation to crack down on Kurdish fighters linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The violence ended a two-year truce with Kurdish militants fighting a guerrilla war for independence.

"Turks have a phobia of Kurds because they are scared of their Turkish Kurds, some 20 million of them living in Turkey,” Abd Salam Ali, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party's representative to Russia, told RIA Novosti, adding that “Kurds have interfered with Erdogan's plans in Turkey.”

"Islamic State has military bases in Turkey, and is using it as a corridor. Turkey currently plays a role similar to the one Pakistan played in the 1980s. When the Soviet forces were stationed in Afghanistan, jihadists arrived there through Pakistan, along with the money and arms," Abd Salam Ali noted.

Bahrain refutes media reports of plans for ‘boots on the ground’ in Syria

Bahrain refutes media reports of plans for ‘boots on the ground’ in Syria | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
In an interview to RT Arabic, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, has denied media reports that Manama is planning to send ground troops to Syria.

Media outlets including Reuters have cited the kingdom’s ambassador to the UK, Sheikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, who allegedly claimed his country will send troops to Syria “with the approval of Saudi Arabia.” Last week, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) stated their readiness to join the ground operation in Syria to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

“The statement made by the Bahraini ambassador in London was misunderstood. Our ambassador did not say that Bahrain plans to send or is even ready to send its ground troops to Syria or any other country to fight terrorism,” Khalid Al Khalifa told RT Arabic. “Bahrain is true to its commitment to fighting terrorism, within the framework of the international coalition established in October 2014.”

However, Bahrain does not wish to be part of a ground operation in Syria:“We take great interest in the stability of the brother nation [of Syria] and the expulsion of terrorists from its land. In this regard, the international community must have full mutual understanding, and understand our position on the need to fight internationally recognized terrorists of all colors.”

POLITICO Brussels Playbook Plus — Obama Photo Bomb — EU Spam-a-Lot — Budget crunching

POLITICO Brussels Playbook Plus — Obama Photo Bomb — EU Spam-a-Lot — Budget crunching | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
BY THE NUMBERS (BUDGETARY DISCHARGE 2014 Edition): No need to pore over all 162 pages of the 2014 Budgetary Discharge documents on a Friday night, here are few gems we pulled out for you.

€1.5 million: How much Parliament has paid Facebook and Twitter for advertising. Aren’t they supposed to be regulating these companies on data protection?

€120,000: The cost of updating the Parliament’s logo

€12,800: The cost for each of the 31 MEPs and staff members to swan around to European film festivals in Cannes, Venice and Berlin to promote the LUX Prize. What was that again?

€5 million: How much the Parliament spent to broadcast the European Parliament election results live from the Brussels plenary chamber

75: The number of staffers the European finance department claims it would need to oversee how MEPs are spending their general expenditure allowance, so for now there’s no oversight. Too costly!

I’M AN OFFICIAL, GET ME OUT OF HERE! The European Parliament’s employee unions are up in arms about the latest injustice from management: the thought of making EU officials work in cubicles. SHOCK! HORROR! Eurocrats are not poultry, they cry! An e-mail from the trade union SAFE with the subject line “Help! They want us to work in cubicles” seemed pretty desperate for a reality most workers accept. It compared the conditions to chicken pens. “There may be an EU directive protecting chickens and other poultry and improve their welfare, but EU officials and agents will be confined in small spaces when moving to a new building by 2018-2019,” the email says. “We will have to work in ‘cubicles’ — a kind of mini-compartmentalised work spaces, chicken pens actually — as offices.” The union even compared the work environments to “a choice between plague and cholera.” Welcome to the Third World, Eurocrats. Playbook will get you through it. We work in an open environment and quite like it that way.

THE TRAIN THAT NEVER CAME: MEPs were promised a direct train link from the European quarter to Brussels airport by December 2015, but the project has been delayed and they’re still waiting. Not even the legislative might of the European Parliament can move the project along any quicker. In the meantime, we’re all still dealing with the Schuman metro station obstacle course. The mezzanine level of the station now appears to be complete — no more temporary lighting, cables to trip over or dodgy surfaces. Instead, there is now a brightly-lit, cavernous, empty space the size of a school gym. It’s still a daily mystery as to which of the escalators will be working/not working. Now … which small member state can get finishing the station into the U.K. renegotiation deal? It might be our only hope.

WEIRDEST TWEET OF THE WEEK: The Parliament is saying what exactly? The best answer wins lunch with us.

END OF ISIS? Russian Jets Hit 900 Targets in Last Three Days, Jihadists Fleeing | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Russia’s intervention in Syria has produced many astounding results since it began late last year, and they seem to be continuing into the new year too.

Major General Igor Konashenkov is reporting that the Russian airstrikes have hit almost 900 targets from 1-4 February in Aleppo, Latakia, Homs, Hama and Deir ez-Zor, which have caused the terrorists to sustain heavy losses:

“In order to retain at least some semblance of a fighting capacity, the militants’ forces in the Syria’s northern regions continue abandoning their positions and falling back to the Turkish border.”

Furthermore, despite widespread Western, alarmist claims of besieged settlements as they seek to further demonise Assad and the Syrian government, Konashenkov reports the following:

“The soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army, aided by popular forces, have driven back the militants in the province of Aleppo and lifted the blockade from the settlements of Nubul and az-Zahra that were besieged for over four years.”

Chelsea Manning letters: ‘I’ve been stored away all this time without a voice’ | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
American whistleblower and free speech advocate Chelsea Manning, who leaked 750,000 classified US military files to WikiLeaks, has spoken out about her experience of incarceration in a secure military prison.

Despite the restrictions on her freedoms, Manning has become a passionate free speech campaigner, taking opportunities to communicate from prison whenever she can.

In a tranche of letters sent to Amnesty International UK, she reveals snippets of her past, her life in prison and the perilous path that led her there. Amnesty, which has supported Manning since her arrest, has presented her account in podcast form using the voice of an actress.
Early life

Manning, who was previously known as Private Bradley Manning, was serving in the US Army in Iraq in 2009 as a military analyst. Troubled by the actions of US forces and their allies, she made a decision to leak a large amount of classified US military files.

The leak, which her supporters say was in the public interest, led to her incarceration, isolation, and the loss of decades of her freedom. She is now locked up in a secure military prison in the US serving a 35-year sentence.

Speaking to Amnesty, Manning recounted her early life in an insular town in Oklahoma as being rough. She said both of her parents were heavy drinkers and were prone to erratic and abusive behavior. Her father traveled a lot, so much of her childhood was spent with her sister and her mother.

The most corrupt government on earth, a government so utterly corrupt that it allows former executives of a handful of corrupt mega-banks to run the economic policy of the US solely in the interest of their banks, denying tens of millions of American retirees any interest income on their savings for 7 years and denying hard-pressed Social Security recipients any cost-of-living adjustments by falsifying inflation measures, a government so totally corrupt that it has destroyed seven countries and millions of Muslims solely on the basis of lies, this irredeemably corrupt government has accused the most admired political leader on earth of corruption.

The backlash is so strong that the German media might not survive. http://russia-insider.com/en/germany/germans-abandon-major-news-sites-anger-over-slanted-russia-coverage/ri885

Here is Stephen Lendman’s take on Washington’s latest attempt to demonize Putin:

Phony US Claims About Putin’s Corruption

by Stephen Lendman

Relentless US Putin bashing persists, reckless accusations made – including invading Ukraine and murder, evidence backing up claims absent. None exists.

Putin is vilified for forthrightly defending Russian sovereign independence, supporting a multi-polar world, and challenging Washington’s imperial agenda – at the same time seeking world peace and stability along with mutual cooperation among all nations.

Comments by US officials reflect administration policy. Britain’s BBC is state-owned, controlled and operated. Propaganda substitutes for credible news and information.

Peace Talks “Paused” After Putin’s Triumph in Aleppo

Peace Talks “Paused” After Putin’s Triumph in Aleppo  | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
“This is the beginning of the end of jihadi presence in Aleppo. After 4 years of war and terror, people can finally see the end in sight.”

— Edward Dark, Twitter, Moon of Alabama

A last ditch effort to stop a Russian-led military offensive in northern Syria ended in failure on Wednesday when the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and heavy Russian air cover broke a 40-month siege on the villages of Nubl and al-Zahra in northwestern Aleppo province. The Obama administration had hoped that it could forestall the onslaught by cobbling together an eleventh-hour ceasefire agreement at the Geneva peace talks. But when the news that Syrian armored units had crashed through al Nusra’s defenses and forced the jihadists to retreat, UN envoy Staffan de Mistura suspended the negotiations tacitly acknowledging that the mission had failed.

“I have indicated from the first day that I won’t talk for the sake of talking,” the envoy told reporters, saying he needed immediate help from international backers led by the United States and Russia, which are supporting opposite sides of a war that has also drawn in regional powers.” (Reuters) De Mistura then announced a “temporary pause” in the stillborn negotiations which had only formally begun just hours earlier. Developments on the battlefield had convinced the Italian-Swedish diplomat that it was pointless to continue while government forces were effecting a solution through military means.
