Why the ‘Sultan of Chaos’ is freaking out By Pepe Escobar »» A Must Read!!

Why the ‘Sultan of Chaos’ is freaking out By Pepe Escobar »» A Must Read!! | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Picture sleepless nights at ‘Sultan’ Erdogan’s palace in Ankara. Imagine him livid when he learns the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by Russian air power, started a preemptive Battle of Aleppo – through the Bayirbucak region - cutting off Ankara’s top weaponizing corridor and Jihadi highway.
Trends
Islamic State

Who controls this corridor will control the final outcome of the war in Syria.

Meanwhile, in Geneva, the remote-controlled Syrian opposition, a.k.a. High Negotiations Committee, graphically demonstrated they never wanted to meet with the Damascus delegation in the first place – “proximity” talks or otherwise, even after Washington and Moscow roughly agreed on a two-year transition plan leading to a theoretically secular, nonsectarian Syria.

The Saudi front wanted no less than Ahrar al-Sham, Jaysh al-Islam and all Jabhat al-Nusra, a.k.a. al-Qaeda in Syria, collaborators at the table in Geneva. So the Geneva charade, quicker than one can say “Road to Aleppo!” was exposed for what it is.
And forget about NATO

Notorious Saudi intel mastermind Prince Turki, a former mentor of one Osama bin Laden, has been to Paris on a PR offensive; all he could muster was an avalanche of non-denial denials - and blaming the whole Syria tragedy on Bashar al-Assad.

The bulk of the Syrian ‘opposition’ used to be armchair warriors co-opted by the CIA for years, as well as CIA Muslim Brotherhood patsies/vassals. Many of these characters preferred the joys of Paris to a hard slog on Syrian ground. Now the ‘opposition’ is basically warlords answering to the House of Saud even for bottles of water – regardless of the suit-and-tie former Ba’ath Party ministers handpicked to be the face of the opposition for the gullible Western corporate media.

Meanwhile, the ‘4+1’ – Russia, Syria, Iran, Iraq, plus Hezbollah – is now winning decisive facts on the ground. The break down; there won’t be regime change in Damascus. Yet no one broke the news to the Turks and Saudis.

‘Sultan’ Erdogan is wallowing in a sea of desperation. He continues to divert the gravely serious issues at stake to his own war against the PYD - the umbrella organization of the Syrian Kurds - and the YPG (People's Protection Units, their military wing). Erdogan and Prime Minister Davutoglu wanted the PYD not only banned from Geneva but they want it smashed on the ground, as they see the PYD/YPG as “terrorists” allied to the PKK.

"The kingdom is ready to participate in any ground operations that the coalition [against Islamic State] may agree to carry out in Syria," Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, who is also the spokesman for the Saudi-led Arab coalition in Yemen, told al-Arabiya.

According to Asseri, Saudi Arabia has been an active member of the US-led coalition since the country’s warplanes carried out more than 190 aerial missions against Islamic State targets.

UN News - Dire health situation of 2 million Libyans ‘cannot wait for political solution’ to conflict – UN agency official

UN News - Dire health situation of 2 million Libyans ‘cannot wait for political solution’ to conflict – UN agency official | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
With a political deal among Libya’s numerous factions in flux, some $50 million is urgently needed to meet the life-saving needs of nearly 2 million people in crisis-torn country, as the conflict lingers and the yearlong peace process has again hit stumbling blocks, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.

“We cannot wait for a political solution in order to respond, we need to act now,” Syed Jaffar Hussain, WHO Representative for Libya, said during a special briefing on Libya in Geneva.

“The health situation in Libya is rapidly deteriorating, with extensive displacement, damage and closure of health facilities in conflict areas,” stressed Reida Oakely, Libya’s Minister of Health.

Of great concern are health risks such as increased communicable diseases, outbreaks of measles and polio, mortality, as well as limited healthcare, services and prevention especially for vulnerable groups.

“We need both financial resources and the international humanitarian community to step up efforts to help save the lives of children, mothers and the elderly who are most at risk,” said Mr. Hussain, adding “this is not about politics; it is about health needs.”

The UN health agency and its partners are also facing some serious challenges on the ground. There are critical shortages of health care workers as the majority of nursing staff were evacuated in 2014.

Further, health facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, blood banks are limitedly functional while life-saving medicines and vaccines are also in short supply.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet staged in Calais ‘Jungle’

Shakespeare’s Hamlet staged in Calais ‘Jungle’ | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
A production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet is being staged by a touring theatre company in the ‘Jungle’ refugee and migrant camp near the French port town of Calais.

As part of the Globe to Globe world tour, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre company has taken the production to various countries, including a stop off in Malta for Libyan asylum seekers.

Good Chance theatre, which operates the dramatic venue in the Calais camp, said more than 300 people had turned out to watch the performance.

Around 5,000 people live in the camp permanently, where residents have built their own basic facilities and places of worship.

The tour will also perform at refugee camps in Jordan, Djibouti and Cameroon, marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.

Globe Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole said: “This performance will be yet another wonderful example of this ground-breaking tour’s ability to reach displaced people across the world.

“It’s a privilege that our Hamlet company have been able to perform in the Calais Jungle and our thanks go to Good Chance for enabling this,” he added.

Libya: Isis drafting 'army of the poor' as Daesh fighters with $1,000 cash hand-outs (REALLY?) | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
The Islamic State is enticing new recruits to enlist as foot soldiers from Africa's most impoverished countries, say Libyan intelligence chiefs. Isis (Daesh) is offering tempting cash sums to people in Chad, Mali and Sudan, where a few hundred dollars is comparable to a year's pay.

IS's self-styled caliphate in Colonel Gaddafi's home town of Sirte now has a burgeoning number of black African fighters alongside the Syrians and Iraqis who make up the body of its leadership.

Colonel Muncif al Walda, a senior police officer in the nearby city of Misrata, told The Telegraph: "Illegal immigration is a menace because it brings and encourages foreign fighters to come and fight with Isil [IS].

"Most of the migrants want to go to Europe, but some want to link up with Isil [IS]. Unfortunately, here in Libya we are right in the middle of the migration rat run."

Kiev Regime Apoplectic Over French Maidan Documentary

Kiev Regime Apoplectic Over French Maidan Documentary | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Ukraine’s authorities have urged a French broadcaster to take a documentary titled “Masks of Revolution” off the air. They claim the movie misrepresents Maidan events, and have a list of their own suggestions for what needs to be shown.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in their facebook statement went as far as to urge Canal+ TV to overhaul their editorial policy.

Posted by
Міністерство закордонних справ України / MFA of Ukraine on Sunday, January 31, 2016

The film is scheduled to be shown on February 1.

“Paul Moreira strips the masks of modern-day Ukraine and carries out an investigation on the firing line of the new 'Cold War' between the East and the West,” the synopsis posted on the Canal+ website reads.

The film is a special investigation carried out by Paul Moreira, which covers the events in Ukraine over 2014: the far-right radical groups allegedly backed by the US, as well as the deadly violence in the southern Ukrainian town of Odessa.

Ukrainian authorities say that Moreira’s Masks of Revolution is “deception” and not an example of “media pluralism,” as it provides a “misrepresented view on the situation in Ukraine.”

"The version of events in the Ukraine offered in the film is pleasing to the ears of conspiracy theories’ supporters and of pro-Russian propagandists. This pamphlet is a documentary made in the worst tradition of misinformation,” the statement adds.

The diplomats went on to urge Canal+ “to reconsider the possibility of airing the film on TV.”

Also, the embassy gave a list of suggestions about what the French broadcaster should show about 2014 Maidan events, “hoping that one day these movies will be presented on Canal +”

The filmmaker, Paul Moreira, has responded to the accusations, saying his film was “contrary to the commonly accepted narrative” but the reaction still shocked him.

“I knew I was going to meet a strong opposition, would be accused of playing into the hands of Putin, of using elements of propaganda. I didn’t expect to meet such denial, bordering on hysteria… I was called a ‘terrorist’ in the pay of the Russian secret services. [They are] urging that the film be banned.

“Even the Ukrainian ambassador pressured Canal Plus. That is what surprises me the most. For it seems to me that Ukraine must urgently raise the question of these paramilitary groups. They are, as stated in the film, the greatest threat to Ukrainian democracy.”

Wikileaks spokesman: UK, Sweden should respect UN panel ruling on Assange | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
The UK and Sweden should respect and abide by UN panel ruling if it establishes that Wikileaks’ founder Julian Assange’s detention in London is illegal, Kristinn Hrafnsson, the group’s spokesman, told RT. He said its ‘unthinkable’ to undermine the panel’s decision.

If the leaks of UN panel’s ruling in favor of Assange are confirmed on Friday, the whistleblowing organization expects British authorities to lift the arrest warrant against the Wikileaks founder, “hand him his passport back and secure his freedom,” he said.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron said through his spokesman that the UN panel decision wouldn’t be legally binding and if Assange leaves the Ecuadorian embassy, an arrest warrant will be put into effect.

Putin meets ‘old friend’ Kissinger visiting Russia

Putin meets ‘old friend’ Kissinger visiting Russia | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Russian President Vladimir Putin has met former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in his residence outside Moscow. The Kremlin said that the two have “long-standing, friendly relations” and that they have used the “opportunity to talk.”

The meeting is a continuation of a “friendly dialogue between President Putin and Henry Kissinger, who are bound by a longstanding relationship,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“They communicate all the time, use the opportunity to talk,” he added. Putin “values” this opportunity to discuss pressing international issues as well as exchange opinions on global perspectives, Peskov said.

Putin and Kissenger have had over 10 tete-a-tete meetings so far, according to media reports. When Kissinger visited Russia in 2013 Putin said that Moscow always pays attention to his opinion and called the former secretary of state "a world class politician."

Kissinger, a former US national security adviser and foreign policy head, pioneered the detente policy in 1969 steering the US-Soviet relations to a general ease. For his part in negotiating a ceasefire in Vietnam in an unsuccessful effort to put an end to the Vietnam war (1955-1975) he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

UN News - Libya: $166 million UN-backed humanitarian appeal barely one per cent funded | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Almost two months after its launch, a humanitarian appeal to aid 1.3 million vulnerable people in conflict-torn Libya is 99 per cent unfunded, a senior United Nations official for the North African country warned today, calling on the international community to step up to the plate.

“With winter temperatures plunging and funding support for the Libya Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) stagnant, I am increasingly concerned that vulnerable, conflict-affected people in Libya will continue to suffer due to a lack of meaningful and timely support,” UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya Ali Al-Za’tari said in press statement issued from neighbouring Tunis.

“The gallant efforts of Libyan organizations, public or civic, whether on their own or with external aid, are not enough to meet the demands of the many affected by the conflict,” he said.

The HRP was officially launched in Tunis on 9 December and appealed for some $166 million to assist a targeted population of 1.3 million people out of 2.4 million affected persons.

“Crudely put, the provision of life-saving assistance to affected persons by years of a debilitating and destabilizing conflict equated to $127 per person over a 15-month period (October 2015-December 2016),” Mr. Al-Za’atari said.
