 The Power of “Nyet”

The Power of “Nyet”  | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
The way things are supposed to work on this planet is like this: in the United States, the power structures (public and private) decide what they want the rest of the world to do. They communicate their wishes through official and unofficial channels, expecting automatic cooperation. If cooperation is not immediately forthcoming, they apply political, financial and economic pressure. If that still doesn’t produce the intended effect, they attempt regime change through a color revolution or a military coup, or organize and finance an insurgency leading to terrorist attacks and civil war in the recalcitrant nation. If that still doesn’t work, they bomb the country back to the stone age. This is the way it worked in the 1990s and the 2000s, but as of late a new dynamic has emerged.

In the beginning it was centered on Russia, but the phenomenon has since spread around the world and is about to engulf the United States itself. It works like this: the United States decides what it wants Russia to do and communicates its wishes, expecting automatic cooperation. Russia says “Nyet.” The United States then runs through all of the above steps up to but not including the bombing campaign, from which it is deterred by Russia’s nuclear deterrent. The answer remains “Nyet.” One could perhaps imagine that some smart person within the US power structure would pipe up and say: “Based on the evidence before us, dictating our terms to Russia doesn’t work; let’s try negotiating with Russia in good faith as equals.” And then everybody else would slap their heads and say, "Wow! That's brilliant! Why didn't we think of that?" But instead that person would be fired that very same day because, you see, American global hegemony is nonnegotiable. And so what happens instead is that the Americans act baffled, regroup and try again, making for quite an amusing spectacle.

The whole Edward Snowden imbroglio was particularly fun to watch. The US demanded his extradition. The Russians said: “Nyet, our constitution forbids it.” And then, hilariously, some voices in the West demanded in response that Russia change its constitution! The response, requiring no translation, was “Xa-xa-xa-xa-xa!” Less funny is the impasse over Syria: the Americans have been continuously demanding that Russia go along with their plan to overthrow Bashar Assad. The unchanging Russian response has been: “Nyet, the Syrians get to decide on their leadership, not Russia, and not the US.” Each time they hear it, the Americans scratch their heads and… try again. John Kerry was just recently in Moscow, holding a marathon “negotiating session” with Putin and Lavrov. Above is a photo of Kerry talking to Putin and Lavrov in Moscow a week or so ago and their facial expressions are hard to misread. There’s Kerry, with his back to the camera, babbling away as per usual. Lavrov’s face says: “I can’t believe I have to sit here and listen to this nonsense again.” Putin’s face says: “Oh the poor idiot, he can’t bring himself to understand that we’re just going to say ‘nyet’ again.” Kerry flew home with yet another “nyet.”

OUTRAGEOUS »»» Russian athletes to remain banned from Rio - Court of Arbitration for Sport | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Secretary-General of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Matthieu Reeb has announced that the CAS has declined the appeal by Russian athletes against an IAAF ban from the Rio Olympics competition.

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) lost its appeal against a blanket Olympic ban on its track and field athletes.

"CAS rejects the claims/appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes," CAS said in a statement.

The decision means that long-jumper Darya Klishina, who trains outside Russia, will be the only Russian track and field athlete cleared to compete in Rio

Matthieu Reeb has noted that ROC will not be able to appeal the ruling in the Swiss Federal Court.

The Kremlin "deeply regrets" CAS upholding the ban on Russian athletes, said presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"We can only express our deep regrets. The news is not too good, and we certainly will have to analyze the situation, taking in account the [CAS] decision, that's why I would avoid any further comments on that matter," the Kremlin spokesman said.

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko also offered his thoughts following the announcement.

"I will be brief, an official announcement will follow later. I regret CAS's decision. Unfortunately, by introduction of collective responsibility, it is the creation of a precedent. But we didn't expect a different result. When the IOC vice-president says that Russian athletes have nothing to do at the Olympics - it's certainly a signal,” said Mutko.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), however, can make its own decision regarding the participation of Russian track and field athletes at the Rio Games as the CAS does not have the power to implement the ban itself.

Hillary Clinton and Her Hawks : ICH #Syria

Hillary Clinton and Her Hawks : ICH #Syria | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
As Hillary Clinton begins her final charge for the White House, her advisers are already recommending air strikes and other new military measures against the Assad regime in Syria.

The clear signals of Clinton’s readiness to go to war appears to be aimed at influencing the course of the war in Syria as well as U.S. policy over the remaining six months of the Obama administration. (She also may be hoping to corral the votes of Republican neoconservatives concerned about Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy.)

Last month, the think tank run by Michele Flournoy, the former Defense Department official considered to be most likely to be Clinton’s choice to be Secretary of Defense, explicitly called for “limited military strikes” against the Assad regime.

And earlier this month Leon Panetta, former Defense Secretary and CIA Director, who has been advising candidate Clinton, declared in an interview that the next president would have to increase the number of Special Forces and carry out air strikes to help “moderate” groups against President Bashal al-Assad. (When Panetta gave a belligerent speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, he was interrupted by chants from the delegates on the floor of “no more war!”

Flournoy co-founded the Center for New American Security (CNAS) in 2007 to promote support for U.S. war policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then became Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in the Obama administration in 2009.

Flournoy left her Pentagon position in 2012 and returned to CNAS as Chief Executive Officer. She has been described by ultimate insider journalist David Ignatius of the Washington Post, as being on a “short, short list” for the job Secretary of Defense in a Clinton administration.

Last month, CNAS published a report of a “Study Group” on military policy in Syria on the eve of the organization’s annual conference. Ostensibly focused on how to defeat the Islamic State, the report recommends new U.S. military actions against the Assad regime.

Flournoy chaired the task force, along with CNAS president Richard Fontaine, and publicly embraced its main policy recommendation in remarks at the conference.

She called for “using limited military coercion” to help support the forces seeking to force President Assad from power, in part by creating a “no bombing” zone over those areas in which the opposition groups backed by the United States could operate safely.

Scientists Confirm Truth Still True Even If Russian Hackers Find It

Scientists Confirm Truth Still True Even If Russian Hackers Find It | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Researchers at one of the nation’s top scientific academies have confirmed this morning that truth is still true, no matter where the truth comes from. In particular, they verified that even if a Russian hacker helps expose it, a fact remains truth as long as it is true.

“There has been a big story in the news lately,” Dr. William Williamson told reporters outside the National Institute of Scientific Sciencery early Monday morning, “and a central theme of that big story is that it came from leaked information that may have been obtained by Russian hackers.”

Williamson said that the news story sparked “intense debate” within NISS and so the scientists at the institute began what they assumed would be a long and laborious set of experiments. They were determined to figure out if something that is factual becomes less-truthful or even fictional, depending on where in the world the information came from. Those experiments, Dr. Williamson said, didn’t take nearly as long as they they had initially thought.

Snowden: I Know How To Figure Out Who Hacked the DNC - It's 'Easy'

Snowden: I Know How To Figure Out Who Hacked the DNC - It's 'Easy' | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
With the scandals plaguing the Democratic National Convention - set to start in just over an hour - get stronger, so does the narrative that it was all Russia's fault the Democratic party was hacked.

As a result, as reported earlier today, the objective FBI said it is now investigating how thousands of DNC emails were hacked, a breach that Hillary Clinton's campaign maintains was committed by Russia to benefit Donald Trump. Indeed, as noted yesterday, Clinton's campaign, citing "experts", pointed to a massive hacking of DNC computers in June that cybersecurity firms linked to the Russian government.

Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta added fuel to the debate Monday, saying there was "a kind of bromance going on" between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump. The Clinton campaign says Russia favors Trump's views, especially on NATO.

Trump on Monday dismissed as a "joke" claims by Hillary Clinton's campaign that Russia is trying to help Trump by leaking thousands of emails from the Democratic National Committee.

"The new joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC emails, which should have never been written (stupid), because Putin likes me," Trump wrote as part of a series of Tweets. "Hillary was involved in the email scandal because she is the only one with judgement (sic) so bad that such a thing could have happened."

The scandal continue into the afternoon when a Motherboard article noted that ""metadata show that the Russian operators apparently edited some documents, and in some cases created new documents""

The Sultan of (Emergency) Swing

The Sultan of (Emergency) Swing | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Amidst an astonishing, relentless, wide-ranging purge that shows no signs of abating, with 60,000 – and counting – civil servants, academics, judges, prosecutors, policemen, soldiers jailed, fired, suspended or stripped of professional accreditation, it’s relatively established by now the Turkish government was very much informed a military coup was imminent on July 15. The information may have come from Russian intelligence, although neither Moscow nor Ankara will reveal any details. So, once and for all, this was no false flag.

A top, secular Middle Eastern intel analyst with an Istanbul front seat view to the coup clarified the internal political context even before the – widely expected – proclamation of a state of emergency (if France can do it, why not Turkey?):

«They knew five to six hours beforehand that a coup was in the works and let it go ahead, knowing, as they must have, that it would fail… This affair has propelled Erdogan to semi-divine status among his supporters. The way is clear for him to get what he wants, which will be a powerful presidency and removal of the secularism principle in the constitution. This would set the stage for the introduction of aspects of Sharia law. He tried this in the early years of the AKP government with the introduction of Zina, a strictly Islamic provision, which would have criminalized adultery and could have opened the door to the criminalization of other islamically illicit sexual relations as Zina is about this in general and not just adultery. But when the EU objected he backed off».

Before Prosecuting Iraq War Criminals, US Must Deal With Afghan War Crime

Before Prosecuting Iraq War Criminals, US Must Deal With Afghan War Crime | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Iraq war criminals deserve to be prosecuted. Britain’s Chilcot report is only the most recent example of a worthy cause needing to be addressed. But in 1979, long before false intelligence was used to justify the Iraq war, a heinous war crime was committed against Afghanistan by President’s Carter’s National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski.

By Paul Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gould

It’s not just Brzezinski who is culpable. It was the Washington bureaucracy that enabled Brzezinski to activate his Machiavellian plot of intentionally drawing the Soviets into his “Afghan Trap.”

How the Washington bureaucracy enabled Brzezinski's scheme and why it's still important today

Hands Untied? US Troops Relax Rules of Engagement in Afghanistan
Once the Soviets took Brzezinski's bait and crossed the border into Afghanistan on December 27, 1979 the fates of both countries were doomed. As if in a trance, a complacent bureaucracy turned a blind eye to the lack of proof of the American claims that the Soviet invasion was a step towards world domination. Within days the beltway became a cheering squad, enabling Brzezinski to fulfill his imperial dream of giving the Soviets their own "Vietnam." The bureaucracy's motivation was simple. Brzezinski was winning the only game in town, the Cold War against the "Evil Empire." The fact that Brzezinski's deceitful plot could lead to the death of Afghanistan as a sovereign state did not concern Washington's elites, either from the right or the left. Predictably, Afghans' lives have been turned into an endless nightmare that festers to this day. Not only is Brzezinski's scheme continuing to undermine Afghanistan's sovereignty, his Russophobia also drives NATO's unjustified aggression towards Russia today!

France says 3 soldiers killed during anti-terror mission in Libya

France says 3 soldiers killed during anti-terror mission in Libya | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
PARIS — Three French soldiers were killed in Libya "while on a mission," the French Defense Ministry announced Wednesday in the first official confirmation that French special forces have been active in Libya in apparent operations against the Islamic State.

French officials gave few details on the deaths.

But the Associated Press, quoting Libyan officials, reported that the French soldiers were killed Sunday in an attack on their helicopter. An Islamist militia known as the "Defending Benghazi Brigade" claimed responsibility for the downing.

Islamic State fighters are now estimated to number between 2,000 and 5,000 across Libya, which has been gripped by unrest and political upheavals since a Western-aided uprising in 2011 brought down longtime ruler Moammar Gaddafi, who was captured and killed by rebels.
