The most obvious problem for the EU is that it makes absolutely no economic sense. Initially, in the early 1950s, there was a small group of not too dissimilar nations which decided to integrate their economies. These were the so-called Inner Six who founded the European Community (EC): Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. In 1960 this “core group” was joined by seven more countries, the Outer Seven, who were unwilling to join the EC but wanted to join a European Free Trade Association (EFTA). These were Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Together these countries formed what could loosely be called “most of western Europe”.

The MIGRANT CRISIS: Simplified For Idiots and Xenophobes...

The MIGRANT CRISIS: Simplified For Idiots and Xenophobes... | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it
Just in the last day, two more horrific incidents have occupied headlines. One concerned the bodies of ’70 migrants’ found in an abandoned lorry near the Austrian border. The decomposing state of the bodies suggest that they had been dead for one to two days, the police have said, suggesting that the victims must have already been dead when the lorry crossed into Austria (a country swaying ever more to the Far Right).

Almost simultaneously, hundreds of people are now feared dead in the latest ‘Libya sinkings’, after two boats carrying up to 500 migrants have just capsized off the Libyan city of Zuwara. This is in addition to the well-over-a-thousand who’ve already drowned at sea just in this year.

Let’s establish a quick fact: the overwhelming majority of these people aren’t ‘economic migrants’ – they’re refugees. An example of ‘economic migrants’ are the scores and scores of Europeans who emigrated en-masse to America a few centuries ago and displaced the native population. Another example of ‘economic migrants’ are the scores and scores of Europeans who emigrated en-masse to Australia and New Zealand and displaced and persecuted the native populations. Another example of ‘economic migrants’ are the scores of European who emigrated to South-Africa and Rhodesia and subjugated the native populations for generations. Those are all classic examples of ‘economic migrants’.

Britain, Libya and the Mediterranean

Last week’s drownings in the Mediterranean were the foreseeable, and indeed deliberate, result of the anti-human policies of strategic violence by a dying neo-colonial empire. They were the consequence, firstly, of a series of wars of aggression that have made life intolerable across vast swathes of Africa and West Asia, and secondly of the fateful EU decision last November to end Italy’s search-and-rescue programme, Mare Nostrum. This much has been admitted by politicians and commentators from across the entire British political establishment, from Nigel Farage and the Daily Telegraph to David Cameron and Ed Miliband. Whilst these admissions have often been tempered with caveats, denials, distortions and half-truths, the hideous reality behind them is increasingly impossible to deny.

The scale of the crisis in the Mediterranean can't be ignored. Two thousand migrants have died already this year on their journey to Europe. Fifty migrants remain unaccounted for after their rubber dinghy sank, this came just days after 200 migrants were presumed dead after their boat capsized off the coast of Libya.
