Crackdown on unions using safety as a weapon - proposed changes to Queensland WHS Act | Lexology

Crackdown on unions using safety as a weapon - proposed changes to Queensland WHS Act | Lexology | Safety Controlling the unpredictable Ohs in practice | Scoop.it
The Queensland Government introduced the Work Health and Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 (Bill) into State Parliament on 13 February…
Dennis Finlayson's insight:

This is really interesting. What I have found on social media is a storm in a teacup regarding these proposals. I would agree that a few HSR's and union affiliated officials take advantage of these ''loopholes'', but to make sites less accessible as a result is just not in the best interests of employee safety. If I had any authority in this matter I would suggest that a consultation based review take place. My initial thoughts on what would happen after the review is that individuals who are found gaining access to sites, or stop work on false premises, would face disciplinary action as a result of their actions.

Airline Safety in Asia Not Questioned in Jet Disappearance - Wall Street Journal | Safety Controlling the unpredictable Ohs in practice | Scoop.it
Yahoo News Airline Safety in Asia Not Questioned in Jet Disappearance Wall Street Journal Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, carrying 239 people, has been missing since early Saturday morning after losing contact while somewhere between Malaysia and...
Dennis Finlayson's insight:

This article highlights some disturbing issues regarding air safety. Terrorism is one of the 21st centuries greatest challenges. This case in point alleges that two passports where stolen and used by terrorists to hijack a Boeing 777 flying to China from Malaysia. This event will shake the travellers to the bone who previously thought that their safety onboard was virtually assured. What must learn from this tragic event to ensure nothing like to ever happens again. The causes and underlying systematic problems must be addressed and corrected. This is an area within safety that interests me, it is incredibly devastating yet the conceptualisation of solving this problem is in itself a massive undertaking.

WHO | Workplace health promotion

Dennis Finlayson's insight:

I believe a healthy workforce is crucial towards maintaining a safer workplace. Health promoting initiatives such as smoking cessation, nutritional support and encouraging workers to exercise. This can be achieved through and not limited to subsidised gym memberships, and group exercise classes. I was heavily involved within the health promotion field for over six years. I can personally attest to the value these initiatives provide to the individual and to the group level. Research completed by WHO ascertains the actual benefits health promotion provides to health and safety within an organisation. I have always felt this was important thats why in all my future OHS endeavours I will aim to improve health promotion within the organisations workforce.

Studies Prove Without Doubt That Unvaccinated Children Are Far Healthier Than Their Vaccinated Peers

Studies Prove Without Doubt That Unvaccinated Children Are Far Healthier Than Their Vaccinated Peers | Safety Controlling the unpredictable Ohs in practice | Scoop.it
Surveys and longitudinal studies show conclusively that unvaccinated children are healthier than their vaccinated peers.
Dennis Finlayson's insight:

This article is an example of misleading non-authoriatative reports that flood the internet. It makes you wonder do these authors publish these articles to promote skepticism or to rationalise their own personal beliefs. This topic in point is one close to home, having young children and knowing the dangers that strangers place them in but not vaccinating their children is abhorrent.

Dennis Finlayson's insight:

The beauty of safety... Even though this advertisement for Air New Zealand was on the wrong end of some criticism, I can't think of any other safety instructional video that has been so popular. A minority of people had reservations over this video in that it portrayed women in sexist manner. However the ''safety message'' was delivered clearly and with an element of humour. The fact remains more people will remember this video than that of a standard ''no fun'' video. In my opinion we need achieve safety by any means, and that includes using clever instructional video's that go ''viral'' online.

Find information on work health and safety in Queensland, including information for industry, legislation, penalties, obligations, licensing and training
Dennis Finlayson's insight:

This link should be the first point of contact when someone working within a Queensland based business needs assistance with OHS. The main reason is that WHSQ has most of the applicable information required for health and safety compliance. WHSQ also has the function of providing personalised support such as an info-line, a phone question service. This is very helpful for employees, employers and so forth. I personally would like to formulate a certain amount of on the ground experience within WHSQ.

More could have been done to protect insulation workers: coroner

More could have been done to protect insulation workers: coroner | Safety Controlling the unpredictable Ohs in practice | Scoop.it
A coroner slams the Federal and Queensland governments over the deaths of three tradesmen.
Dennis Finlayson's insight:

This is a devastating failure that has cost the life of three young men in the 17-25yo ''danger bracket''.

This case represents systematic failures on more than one level.

1. The failure to adequately train workers installing insulation, and the use of metal staples.

2.The second is the failure to take corrective measures required. There was numerous warnings relating to the safety of workers involved in the home insulation scheme, and no changes where made.

Piper Alpha: the legacy remains

Piper Alpha: the legacy remains | Safety Controlling the unpredictable Ohs in practice | Scoop.it
On 6 July 1988, several enormous gas explosions and a subsequent fire killed 167 men at the Piper Alpha oil platform in the North Sea, 200km east of Wick.
Dennis Finlayson's insight:

This was a tragedy of epic proportions. This is something that could have been avoided if appropriate safety management systems where in place and effectively utilised. The underlying problem however with Piper Alpha is the fact that operational expenditure came before the crew's safety. Evidently this is an ongoing issue within the oil and mineral industry. A key question that is raised by this disaster is have the industry power brokers learnt from this disaster?

This case study was used in my studies towards a Diploma in OHS. As a result I have spent a considerable amount of time researching the causative factors behind this disaster.
