Quest 3 Fatigue, alcohol and performance impairment : Abstract : Nature

Reduced opportunity for sleep and reduced sleep quality are frequently related to accidents involving shift-workers1, 2, 3. Poor-quality sleep and inadequate recovery leads to increased fatigue, decreased alertness and impaired performance in a variety of cognitive psychomotor tests. However, the risks associated with fatigue are not well quantified. Here we equate the performance impairment caused by fatigue with that due to alcohol intoxication, and show that moderate levels of fatigue produce higher levels of impairment than the proscribed level of alcohol intoxication.

Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

So Will, does fatigue, alcohol and performance impairment some things which you might encounter or sound like some of the conditions in which you might be operating as a DJ.  I'm sorry I could not retrieve this whole article as access was incurring a financial penalty perhaps the University I am studying at include this database or scientific publication in their library.

Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

Will is learning the be a DJ and play music for his mates at parties. From the picture you can see here, although Will is more concerned with looking for the next song, he is exposed to many occupational health risks even in a seemingly relaxed environment. Will is exposed to Fatigue. Some examples of this may be long work hours, high levels of concentration and the need to manage the requirements of various interested parties. Noise is most people like dance music allowed Will at this early age is expose to noise damage the years which may very well result in hearing loss at later stages within his development.  One other risk present here may be through accidental damage or deterioration of electrical equipment. He may very well be exposed to some sort of electrical shock or injury as many cords and power socket interactions are required not only to set up but also pack up the equipment. Best of luck in the future DJ Will

Are training rooms a safe environment in which to learn? | Safety Science | Scoop.it
Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

Scott is a trainer and work colleague.  His role in the picture on this day was to conduct training to a client which specializes in oil and gas production.  Although the students themselves work in some dangerous environments Scott still needs to be aware of the safety of the students under his care.  To achieve this he will conduct a induction which covers locating on first aid equipment, fire exits, muster points and general housekeeping duties in the class.  He does this because he knows he as a duty of care, just as the students also hold a duty to him.  In this way everybody chips in to manage OHS in the environment, no matter how safe it might be compared to or regular place of work

Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

This is Sunwel, he works in the restaurant, during his day the work routine is exposed to many hazards.  Hazards like slips and trips, chemicals, cuts and abrasions, poor atmospheres, long working hours, moving machinery, burns, biological hazards just to name a few. Sunwel manages the risks is exposed to by concentrating on his work and been aware of other workers and actions and activities going on around him. Actual protection for some well is quite minimal not a great deal of P.P.E. or Administration policies and procedures compared to many other industries. Some of the produce and materials which are deployed, from high risk activities such as butchering or planning these are mitigated by substitution and are conducted at third-party facilities specially designed for these activities.

America has the world's largest number of operating nuclear reactors and they are some of the most guarded industrial facilities in USA. In a first of its kind access, NDTV was permitted to visit the twin reactors at North Anna, some 140 kilometres south of Washington, DC. This plant was hit by a massive earthquake six months after the Fukushima accident, but it survived and is today once again powering homes in USA.

QUEST 3 We should work less at night.: Discover It!

Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

I know you're not a doctor but I believe there are some interesting things in this article which you can draw on a news regarding your body clock and the times of day you are likely to be working as a DJ. In case you are too lazy to read this article it basically outlines how your performance is reduced. I know you play lots of records and this task is repeated often so working at night depletes your ability to perform repeated tasks accurately. I bet you have a need need to concentrate for long time and since there is lots of girls you need to manage, your decision making capacity deteriorates over time at night time.  A good piece of information you could draw on it in the article highlights that night workers and the risks that they face because of fatigue and not time does not and will disappear when they finish their jobs and leave work. Most of the incidents involved car crashes, near miss incidents, incidents involving in voluntary sleep and other fatigue related injuries in other words mate don't work too hard.

Drilling's dangerous work

Drilling's dangerous work | Safety Science | Scoop.it
Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

Here is a photograph of one of the drill rigs Matt operates on over the last seven years. Work Health and Safety act, Work Health and Safety Mining Acts and Regulations, noise, rotating equipment, atmospheric conditions. These and many more occupational health and safety considerations are required for the day-to-day running of an exploration drill rig. From the picture shown above their seems to be hazards in the form of trip hazards, loud un-shielded engines, hot surfaces, dusty conditions, rotating equipment, exposure to chemicals and substances, solar radiation, noise and fatigue due to working 12 hour shifts just to name a few.  High risk work environments are highly controlled and often require a greater degree of legislative into infrastructure to ensure these jobs can be done in a safe and efficient manner.

Matthew Howard s0248857's insight:

Many business require specialized skills to be able to be conducted by employees.  Some of these skill will only become necessary as the business grows and clients needs are met.

Steve can be seen here showing a training students the correct way in which to connect a trailer receiver so that a vehicle recovery can occur.  OHS considerations managed here require inspection of equipment, risk assessments for the task, trained and authorized to conduct training,  environmental rules and regulations should a oil spill occur as well as procedures to follow, fitness for duty, and P.P.E. required to do the job.
