Farmers get hands-on experience on pig farming techniques - Hindustan Times | Safe Food Practices: The Paddock to the Plate | Scoop.it
Farmers get hands-on experience on pig farming techniques Hindustan Times The training remained packed with different theoretical and practical modules, throwing light on constructing cheap and comfortable sheds for pigs, ensuring hygiene,...
Megan Moore's insight:

A great article that outlines a program that was organised to give farmers a bit more knowledge on pig farming techniques. This article explains how helpful the program was for these farmers, using hands on approaches to broadening their skills in the paddock, while teaching them a bit more about hygiene as well.

I thought this was a great read, as it was about a program to broaden farmers knowledge.

Fruits, vegetables and food safety: Food Safety Begins On The Farm

Megan Moore's insight:

An important resource to show your students. I know i would show this to my year 5/6 class. All students need to know eher their food comes from, and why food safety has to begin on the farm, not just in the kitchen. This does go for 15 minutes, so you would watch before showing your class, and take note of the important parts that you wnt to show them. Perhaps a pop quiz afterward..?!

The Urban Farming Technique That Will Revolutionize the Way We Eat

The Urban Farming Technique That Will Revolutionize the Way We Eat | Safe Food Practices: The Paddock to the Plate | Scoop.it

Aquaponics uses fish to create soil-less farms that can fit into cities much easier.

Urban farming today is no longer a hobby practiced by a few dedicated enthusiasts growing food for themselves. It has become a truly innovative field in which pioneering ventures are creating real, robust, and scalable solutions for growing food for large numbers of people directly at the point of consumption. This is great news not only for urban designers, architects, and building engineers, but also for residents and communities that want to increase food security and become more resilient to climate change.

Visit the article link for more information and details on the practice of aquaponics, natural resource efficiency and the potential for large-scale urban cultivation...

Megan Moore's insight:

What a great article, this is something that everyone should read. Make sure you read it all before showing your class, so you can answer any questions they have.

Its weird to think the world will be in another ten years time...What will they think of next?

Anji Connell's curator insight, April 10, 2013 10:53 PM

'Rooftops present a great opportunity for farming; they are large, unexploited spaces within the city. Most commercial rooftops are also perfectly fit for the technical challenges, in terms of building physics, zoning laws, and system integration with the host building. A standard commercial rooftop in a Western city is about four times the size of our test farm, which means it could produce up to 20 tons of vegetables and four tons of fish — an annual harvest to feed 400. A significant part, if not the entire annual consumption, of fresh fish and vegetables for a building’s tenants could be served through its roof.'

Megan Moore's insight:

This parody brings back the fun to the classroom. It would be a great warm up for the primary years. While educational, it is a resource that speaks to students through song, outlining what farmers do...'They are farming and they grow it'. And lets face it, its a catchy song (better than the original!).

Enjoy

Food safety coaching (Part 1): Handwashing

How to wash your hands properly, to help stop bacteria from spreading.
Megan Moore's insight:

I believe hand washing is one of the most important factors when it comes to food safety. Sometimes people under estimate the power of germs, and your hands touch a lot of things, and in term end up carrying a lot of germs. If you want you and your loved ones to lead a healthy lifestyle, wash your hands before handling food. This is the number one step to leading a healthy lifestyle. This would be a great resource for the primary and high school years.

The Great Debate: Science, Technology and Food

What technologies are farmers and ranchers using to produce food while protecting the environment? Is more research the answer to biotechnology in agricultur...
Megan Moore's insight:

Hi,

This video is a great resource in relation to teaching students about the farming side of food nutrition and technology. Its great for students to know where their food came from, how it was grown and who's growing it.

Discussions on genetice engerneering, pesticides, growing organic, and how technologies are helping livestock and farmers.

This video is rather lengthy, so it is a good idea to go through it before showing it to your students and writing down the points that you want your class to see. Perhaps a good idea would be to write down the time of the dicussion that you want your class to see, then pause it.Students could then have a class discussion on what they just saw and learnt about, and how this affects them.

This clip shows real issues that are happening today. I believe that it is good for students to learn that fresh food is not just made in  a factory, that farmers face real issues when producing their products. This could make them think and appreciate the effort that some one has put into the food that has come from the paddock and onto their dinner plate.

Nutrition (Food ) Table Video for Kids-Food Pyramid -Heathy Diet

Visit http://www.makemegenius.com for free educational videos for kids. Understanding of Food-Pyramid,lesson for children.
Megan Moore's insight:

This video is a great resource to be shown by teachers to students as it teaches students about healthy eating and nutrition and what foods you should eat to give you lots of energy.

It is well documented that Australia is fast becoming one of the countries with the highest obesity rate. Its up to the adults to make a change and guide the children that are our future on what the healthy choices are. This resource shows students what type of foods they should be eating to keep them healthy and full of energy, all while doing so in a fun and enthusiastic way. It shows students the food pyramid, giving them an idea of what foods they should be eating and how often.

I highly recommend this resource, not only for the nominated age year level of 5-6, but i believe it would be useful for the whole primary sector.

Low input farming - diversity is the key

Low input farming - diversity is the key | Safe Food Practices: The Paddock to the Plate | Scoop.it
Sustainable, agriculture must be low-input - and this can only achieved in diverse, tightly integrated agro-ecological systems. The real future of farming lies in complex polycultures ... in short, mixed farming.

Via Martin Vieira
Megan Moore's insight:

This resource relates to the content descriptor :

investigating how food and fibre are produced in managed environments.

The article considers how low-input sustainable agriculture (LISA) is used not only in Australia, but in other countries as well and that 'this can only be achieved in diverse, tightly integrated agro-ecological systems'.

I believe that this is an article that could be used to show how farming is diverse and complex.

Introduction to my curation

Introduction to my curation | Safe Food Practices: The Paddock to the Plate | Scoop.it

Welcome eveyone,

As you are going through my curation, i thought i would take a brief moment to introduce myself.

My name is Megan, and i am fourth year university student studying my Bachelor of Primary Education ( while undertaking the middle years pathway).

This curation has been constructed as part of the assignment for EDP4130. My focus is to provide primary school teachers, in particular those teaching the year levels 5-6 about safe food practices, and how technologies are used in preparing and handling foods. This topic has been linked with the content descriptors from the Australian Curriculum: Design and Technologies:

Design and Technologies knowledge and understanding

- Investigate how and why food and fibre are produced in manageed environments (ACTDEK021).

- Investigate the role of food preparation in maintaining good health and the importance of food safety and hygiene (ACTDEK022).

Design and Technologies processes and production skills

-Apply safe procedures when using a variety of materials components, tools, equipment and techniques to make designed solutions (ACTDEP026).

This can also be retrieved from: http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/technologies/design-and-technologies/Curriculum/F-10

It is my belief that students should be taught about the safe preperation and handling of food from a young age, as this is knowledge that they will need to know early on in life, and carry with them as they grow.

I hope you enjoy my curation, and please get in contact with me if you have any questions.

Megan :-)

Megan Moore's insight:

Hi everyone,

This would be a great video for teachers to show students. It approaches the subject of cross contamination, with a quirky humourous side to it that would interest children.

This directly links to the content descriptor in Design and Technologies of the Australian Curriculum:

Investigate the role of food preperation in maintaining good health and the importance of food saftey and hygiene (ACTDEK022).

Hygiene is very important when handling food, and helps towards maintaining good health and well being, and there are important precauctions students should learn from a young age for when it comes to handling food safely.

Enjoy.
