Smart Grid R&D Opportunities Outlined in Two New NIST Reports | NIST.gov

Smart Grid R&D Opportunities Outlined in Two New NIST Reports | NIST.gov | S&S - Energy | Scoop.it

The nation's aging power grid is evolving into a modern, "smart" energy distribution network, and with these changes comes a host of challenges for the research and development community, as outlined in two new reports* issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The documents provide valuable perspective to power company system planners, industrial and academic researchers, and senior decision makers concerned with development of the smart grid.

Both reports –Technology, Measurement, and Standards Challenges for the Smart Grid and its companion, Strategic R&D Opportunities for the Smart Grid – identify the most important technical issues in the smart grid arena, and prioritize impediments and R&D areas that must be addressed for successful deployment of the smart grid. The latter publication, especially, should prove useful to a broader audience, according to NIST Engineering Laboratory Director Shyam Sunder.

Silicon Valley Power lets residents piggyback on its communications network | Smart Grid News

Silicon Valley Power lets residents piggyback on its communications network | Smart Grid News | S&S - Energy | Scoop.it

Santa Clara's municipal electric utility, Silicon Valley Power (SVP), provided free outdoor wireless Internet access for its customers as part of its advanced metering SVP MeterConnect program. SVP said Santa Clara is the first city in the country to offer free outdoor Wi-Fi access to an entire community as an element of an advanced electric meter upgrade program that employs wireless technology to read meters.

"This is just one of the major benefits our community will enjoy as a result of our advanced metering technology," said John Roukema, SVP director. "Now our residents, visitors and local workforce can get Internet access while waiting for a train, shopping downtown, getting their car washed or relaxing in their yard."

The utility plans to begin installing the advanced meters, which will track electricity and water usage wirelessly, late this year. The system also will help SVP identify power outages quickly and help customers monitor their electricity use.
