Tali Sharot: The optimism bias >> You Can Soar Like an Eagle, even if you are just a penguin... Here is a How-To!

Are we born to be optimistic, rather than realistic?

Unrealistic optimism is a bias that makes someone believe that he/she has a less risk of experiencing a negative event compared to others. It may be caused by the person's mood at the moment, the information they have about themselves versus others, or their desired end state. Unrealistic optimism is also known as the optimism bias or comparative optimism.

Tali Sharot shares new research that suggests our brains are wired to look on the bright side -- and how that can be both dangerous and beneficial.

More on Tali Sharot:
Tali studies why or brains are biased toward optimism.

"Researchers have used terms such as unrealistic optimism and optimistic bias to refer to concepts that are similar but not synonymous.

Drawing from 3 decades of research, we discuss critically how researchers define unrealistic optimism, and we identify four types that reflect different measurement approaches: unrealistic absolute optimism at the individual and group levels and unrealistic comparative optimism at the individual and group levels.

In addition, we discuss methodological criticisms leveled against research on unrealistic optimism and note that the criticisms are primarily relevant to only one type: the group form of unrealistic comparative optimism.

We further clarify how the criticisms are not nearly as problematic as they might seem, even for unrealistic comparative optimism.

Finally, we note boundary conditions on the different types of unrealistic optimism and reflect on five broad questions that deserve further attention."

The Science of Optimism:

Why We're Hard-Wired for HopeWe all like to think of ourselves as rational creatures who smartly prepare for the worst. We watch our backs, weigh the odds, and pack an umbrella when the skies look threatening.

But although we take such sensible precautions, we still generally expect things to turn out pretty well — often better than they usually do. This belief that the future will probably be much better than yesterday or today is known as the optimism bias, and most of us have it.

Why?

Tali Sharot's The Science of Optimism delves into the biological reasons as to why we're hard-wired for hope, exploring the advantages (and disadvantages) of our optimistic nature, as well as what makes people content and why.

She examines fresh research that explores the part of the brain where optimism lives, providing fresh and surprising biological and cultural reasons as to why we all seem to presume sunny skies ahead.
