Supernatural!

Supernaturals flow on Television.

Aladdin Salman's curator insight, November 13, 2013 5:59 PM

Is the flow of programming important in terms of entertainment? If we were to watch a show on Cartoon Network and commercials were about insurance, jobs, and makeup would it appeal to children as much as It would adults? The flow in which television is perceived is very important regardless of how we watch it. The way the show grabs our attention as well as the advertisers is very important to them and businesses. If the two medias don’t have a tight bond in regards to television flow ratings may diminish and shows go off air, products would be out off the markets, and people overall will lose interest. So I chose a show called Supernatural to show the effects of good flow on television and how it affects the people who watch T.V.

Supernatural is a tale of two brothers who grow up into the family business known as hunting. The things they hunt though are demons, mythical creatures, ghosts, and many other dark creatures that walk the earth and try to bring peace to the world as best as they can. It all starts with the vengeance of the loss of their mother to a yellow-eyed demon and their search to find and kill it for what it had done. From there on one thing lead to another and even more tragic events occurred such as; opening the gates to hell, fighting Lucifer as a result of the potential apocalypse, as to now the search for god, permanently close the gates of hell and angels falling from heaven. As they fight and kill anything in there way and try there hardest to do the right thing just so the world could be a little less bad than it already is.

The two main characters within the T.V. show are Jensen Ackles (DeanWinchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester). Along with many other characters that are important to the story such as Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer), Misha Collins (Castiel), and many others who are simple encounters throughout the show but still have an impact on the story. The creator of the show is Eric Kripke. His inspiration for the show came from his love for urban legends and American mythology. The show began airing in the year 2005 making it a solid 8 years of air time with 9 seasons created. The show is currently aired on the CW network which was once known as the WB (Warner Brothers) network. After the first season the two networks UPN had merged with WB to form the CW network and have been ever since.

With a show like Supernatural you most likely could derive many themes from it the overall main theme that could be pulled out from Supernatural is the battle between good and evil. In hope that people’s small efforts could pay off and may have some impact in end. It also gives off the importance of family throughout the show. The two brother’s definitely see life in different lights but in the end want the same thing but stress highly throughout the entire show how much each other means to one another. They have lost the majority of their family due to all the events that they have encountered. They lost their mother, father, very close friends who were family like Bobby Singer. They even tried to start their own families themselves and leave the hunting life, but it always found them in the end. This making Sam and Deans brotherly bond grow so strongly over the years and through every season.

Along with meaning of the show we come to the commercial advertisements during the show. As I watched Supernatural and actually sat down and watched the commercials to analyze what was being advertised I was a little dumbfounded on the patterns I saw because week after week they are very similar. The advertisements ranged from AT&T commercials which involved little kids and had a cuteness factor to involved which conflicts with a scary show about killing and so forth. From there it ranged from advertisements from little Caesars pizza, clothing commercials, makeup commercials, as well as other shows which are to come on this week on the CW such as Vampire Diaries and Arrow. As I thought to myself how do all these ads come together in relationship to the main show itself and it kind of hit me. The AT&T commercial came to a type of relief factor. The last scene from the show was of a man dying to cute children making funny jokes. From there on was a sense of things that could be done later on this week as in the clothing ad I had mentioned was for Kohl’s stores and how they are having sales from Tuesday to Wednesday the show comes on Tuesday nights at 8 enough time after to go to Kohl’s if it appealed to you. Same applies to Little Caesars advertising their hot and ready pizza just stop buy and pay for your pizza and your home in a matter of seconds to watch your show. Then the makeup for Maybelline lipstick is aimed more towards the woman audience. Then to complete are the other shows on the network for what is going to come on after Supernatural or if you liked this Tomorrow same time the critically acclaimed show Arrow will be on or Vampire Diaries at this time Thursday to simply get other shows to be advertised. That is if this show is as good as the others; why not start watching a new show!

With that all said the audience to this isn’t necessarily focused on one certain group as compared to many. This show has been classified as a Cult show which overall mean that the fandom that this show get are the group of people who have follow it passionately and grows based on the show itself. It attracts too the age group though of 16 and up simply because of the violence and some sexual content that is seen throughout the show. Also in regards to the adds involving car insurance commercials such as Geico expensive technology like the Microsoft surface tablet, I-phone 5, AT&T and so on things teenagers and adult items that would require money and responsibility and so on. Before the CW became a network itself like I said before it was a merger between WB and UPN. Now UPN network is to be aimed more towards woman which makes sense with a lot of the woman talk shows that had emerged over the years on the CW. As well as the shows such asAmerica’s Next Top Model and so on. This leads to some of the advertisements that impact the show such as the Maybelline lipstick commercial I mentioned in the previous paragraph. This indicates that the audience is genuinely mixed between both genders. With all that figured out the overall message in the way its set up is that in accordance to my research Supernatural is currently one of the CW’s top shows that’s airing right now and for quite some time now. So this is a chance for the advertisers to get some of the best items to sell and to the audience in which there is more people. Whether you’re promoting health items, food, clothing, or even other shows on the network. From the show and ads it is all a selling methods. They may even incorporate these objects within the show. Sam Winchester constantly uses a Mac Book to do his hunting research that following the I-phone ad comes together saying they must have good products if Sam is using it.

Overall the show flows well with the meanings in which the whole program comes together. No matter what it advertises or point it gets across I feel it does a good job blending the elements to fit not only with our emotions but with our perspectives on life. The themes of the show in a sense correlate to the commercials they advertise. The Kohl’s commercial talks about bringing the family down and buying cloths for winter season as I mentioned that one of the shows themes focuses on family sounds like an awkward comparison to the two, yet family is family and both aspects and family is important. With regards to pertaining to the audience everything fits. What is being advertised are things people of these age groups need and use and I myself feel that I sometimes fall into the schemes of television which allows this show to be a perfectly flowed T.V. program.
