The perfect introductin for this forum: An important tool to electronic musicans and hip hop musicians is youtube! It allows these artists to affordably find rare music that is shared on the internet by vinyl enthusiest.

Today, Google has announced “Artists Hub”, a self service feature for Google Music, which will allow independent musicians to sell their own music.

Artists keep 70% of the revenue, and there’s no per album or annual upload fees.

The service lets independent artists come into the service and easily upload information about the band, along with single tracks or entire albums complete with artwork.

The technology or idea is not new but the site is just plum cool! Songdrop is a bookmark site for all the music you like from across the web. Your music crate or collection can be shared, followed and made into playlists. But again, where Songdrop wins is the design. My hand is itching already to start thumbing through music online as I would feel walking into an old wharehouse in Oakland filled with discarded records.

I loved this TEdx talk.  MusicianCorps CEO Kiff Gallagher is hitting on an idea that could be expanded through and in collaboration with his organization. We need more portals in which commercial music is funneled into everyday life beyond the party and headphone apparel. These portals in part could be managed by non-profits in partnership with for profits, but sometimes the culture of each erect walls to limit the effect of currency running between the two. Maybe, there is cultural profit that can be funneled back into capital profit and the two could work in more effective harmony. Just a little theorectical brainstorm while I listening to Mieka Pauley on bandcamp.com/miekapauley.

A few folks have sent over variations on two different reports concerning the music industry, with some suggesting that this is "proof" that the recording industry's "war on piracy" has been effective on two fronts: increasing sales and reducing piracy. Of course, for many years, we've questioned whether or not reducing piracy actually increases sales, so we looked closely at the numbers and they don't seem to say what some people think they're saying. The Hollywood Reporter has a good summary of both reports. One comes from IFPI, celebrating that "global recorded music revenue" rose 0.3% in 2012. That is, obviously, a tiny increase, but it is an increase. Of course, as we've noted, "recorded" music revenue is merely one piece of the wider music industry ecosystem -- and that entire ecosystem has been growing for quite some time.

The second report comes from one of the industry's favorite researchers, NPD, claiming a massive decline in music file sharing (based on consumer surveys). I've found NPD's data to be suspect in the past, but let's just assume this is true. Then, can we reach the conclusion that the industry's anti-piracy efforts both worked and that it led to increased sales?

Actually... no. Not even close. We can see this pretty clearly just by looking beyond the recorded music market, to the wider file sharing space. Various reports have made it clear that widespread file sharing (mostly of infringing content) has continued to grow quite rapidly during the same time period. Sandvine reports (pdf) that BitTorrent traffic increased 40% over the same basic time frame. Or, zero in on a different market beyond music. How about software? The BSA's annual report continues to show increases in "piracy."

360 Deals makes the artist think about all the ways in which money can be squuezed out of his/her talent. For some time, we, the artists, understood our talents are not limited to just music. But are we willing to sacrifice all that we are to get a deal? 360 Deals are becoming common place with both labels and publishers. These talentless hoovers are in the business of sucking the surround sound out of your own multi-talented boom with promises of support in arenas where most labels are unfamiliar. So this leaves us to question how a 360 deal will affect your incentive to produce art period? 

 

The industrial walls are closing in and the elevator is stuck somewhere between the penthouse and the basement. How shall we proceed? One answer is what Jay-Z once rhymed, "I came to a crossroad and went straight!" If the music industry is aware of the milead of ways money can be made then we, the artists, should be as well. We may find that we, THE ARTISTS, are in obvious closer proximity to other cultural commodities that stem from our own talent. Some say, think like a label, I say think as if you are your own industry and how would you behave towards yourself and your community. This also hints to the possibility that the industry is reconfigurating itself at whim and taking cues from YOUR community of fans. Yep, remember them folks? There is an opportunity here to reconfigure some things on our own, redefine industry, benefits bnot just us, not just the bottom ine, but music consciousness itself; that is if you want more than just a deal.

Chill.com has introduced a new interesting service allowing independent content creators of all kinds to sell their own productions easily.


From the original article on GigaOM: "Los Angeles-based Chill.com launched a DRM-free content marketplace for independent creators on Thursday, letting content owners sell streams and HD downloads of their movies, live comedy recordings and other types of videos directly to consumers.


The site’s approach mimics an idea first pioneered by Louis CK a year ago, when the comedian sold a DRM-free download of one of his live sets for $5 online


The new offering, dubbed Chill Direct, is a self-serve marketplace, meaning that anyone can sign up within minutes. The site offers creators the option to determine their own price for their videos, and charge anywhere from $1.99 to $49.99. Seventy percent of that revenue is handed to the creator, and Chill retains 30 percent, which cover the fees for payment services as well as hosting."

My god, the intellectual arrogance of the Napster generation of tweens now grown. The question has always been for me, free music to do what exactly? Sit on your desktop and rot?. The narcissism around p2p sharing is absurd. The thing is I'm not mad at the idea of free music, but it is still presently an undertheorized in practice. Freedom doesn't mean it should be culturally cheapened. How do you combat the greedy excesses of the industry with the excesses of an individual. Anyway, my 2cents.
