Social Media Can Help With Branding, Not Engagement! | Business 2 Community

Social Media Can Help With Branding, Not Engagement! | Business 2 Community | Show Up Public | Scoop.it

Many marketers today are looking to increase their Facebook fans, LinkedIn memberships and/or Twitter followers. Social media marketing is a new buzz-word in both b2b and b2c domains. But, when it comes to engagement, how easy is it to measure the engagement-level of your Facebook fans or LinkedIn Group Members? How easy is it to interact with them and nurture them? How easy is it to get usage and engagement metrics out of Facebook, LinkedIn et al? Is it even possible? Can you act on the metrics? External social sites are good for brand-building (or reach) but not for interaction or engagement. A recent Gartner report cited that a mere six percent of marketers claim that marketing on social networking sites is their top priority. What is even more powerful is that 45 percent of those surveyed said corporate websites were key contributors to marketing success. And from the customer perspective, four out of five customers claim to visit a website for product information and only a mere 19 percent would visit a Facebook page, according to Incyte Group....

This article really helps explore fan engagement and questions if it can really be nutured within social media. Let us not forget that human social interaction still remains most effective in the real world. Is online social media simple a glorified billboard or TV commercial?

Miz, I agree, without engagement and real interaction with customers, social media is just another form of "old" marketing.
Jeff Domansky's curator insight, April 17, 2013 1:58 PM

Without engagement, social media is just another form of "old" style push marketing. Today's consumers don't respond to the style anymore. And they're definitely open to new sources of content, information, and most important interaction while they research and buy.

Is it Wise for Artists to Discount Tickets on Groupon, et al? | Show Up Public | Scoop.it
It's becoming an ever increasing trend to see concert tickets on discount web sites such as Groupon and Living Social. While it may be good for fans to get tickets to see their favorite artists at ...
Show Up Public's insight:

#haveyaheard Groupon like show coupons could be the crippling blow to  independent artists who largely depend on gigs as their bread and butter? A lot of fans can not differentiate between the resources provided to larger acts from independent acts. If larger acts who can afford to discount discounts make this a norm than more and more fan will demand if not expect the same from smaller groups. This is an assumption but I think a rather pragmatic conclusion. It has already shown itself to be true regarding streaming and music sales. Why should one think differently in regard to live shows?

I would suggest rather, not discounting tickets but discounting the experience of going out. More later with #yaheardapp

Translation: If nonprofits start looking at themselves as a brand that people can fall in love with. It would be better if they see your brand, your social cause as a brand that they can self-identify with instead of thinking of it as a charity. The thought process of giving is then turned on its ear.

Some good reminders in this post. I particularly like the following quote:

"To these brands, and many others, I’m invisible. Yet what these brands don’t realize is how important I am to them. Sure, I don’t contribute monetary value, but I do give them tons of word-of-mouth marketing, which can bring them more loyal and valuable customers. Additionally, I bring them targeted, trusted referrals, which are much more valuable than any marketing they could do themselves."

This reminds me of my own love for Dell. Their computers suck but their customer service is top notch!

Where is the "D" in EDM?

Where is the "D" in EDM? | Show Up Public | Scoop.it

"... I’d venture that just because audiences are buying and listening to dance music in droves doesn’t mean they’re necessarily dancing to dance music..."

Show Up Public's insight:

Ditto!! Cool Op-ed piece by Jason King here, originally titled "How bottle service has changed pop music for the worse".  I might add that EDM has created a sort of uniformed way of dancing. Literally everyone is positioned facing the DJ and jumping in unison up and down like that Massa but with less group synergy. They continue to jump until given the cue to raise their hands in the air, like if on a roller-coaster ride. The arrangements of EDM is very formulaic and much like a roller-coaster. What I miss in dance music when shared with others is meeting strangers on the dance floor and having a moment to dance together. Or closing my eyes to dance with whatever spirits are in the room. The bass "rhythms "missing from EDM are replaced with the step 1- work up, step 2-let go, step 3-breakdown, and repeat. It unfortunately leaves a predictable bitter taste in my mouth. NO patience for a true journey orchestrated by a good DJ's (Carlos Mena, Osulande, DJ Rimarkable). I actually like Skrillex and some other EDM producers, not hating...just saying the D in EDM stands for dance, but there isn't much of that happening.
