Embrace, extend, extinguish: How Google crushed and abandoned the RSS industry

Embrace, extend, extinguish: How Google crushed and abandoned the RSS industry | RSSNews | Scoop.it
Most of the commentary I've read so far about the loss of Google Reader has been about its use as an RSS client. But that's a red herring. The real victims were companies that had planned in 2005 and 2006 to build RSS sync engines.
Angel B's insight:

It wasn’t always that way, though. In fact, the short life and sad death of Google Reader tells a familiar story of how Google swept in to a crowded field, killed off almost all credible competition with a free product, and then arbitrarily killed that product when it no longer had a use for it.

Google Reader - A Product vs. A Symbol

Google Reader - A Product vs. A Symbol | RSSNews | Scoop.it
Google Reader, the product, died and should serve as a lesson in missed opportunities. But the loss of Google Reader, the symbol, should be grieved for and contemplated with many furrowed eyebrows.
Angel B's insight:

I get why Google finally killed Reader. But it's another sign that we've entered a darker timeline in the history of the net, where information is becoming even more closed and out of reach.

End Of Blogs

I love my blog. I love your blog. I love blogs. Call me old-fashioned. Loving blogs has nothing to do with me not loving the newer stuff. I love Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other places to publish, share and connect...
Angel B's insight:

"My fear is that when Google Reader goes and Feedburner could be next (which has been on a deathwatch), that it diminishes the ways in which people can find, share and add to this type of content. Blogs are important. This isn't the end of blogging."

Why Did Google Reader Die? What Free Web Service Will Be Next? | RSSNews | Scoop.it
I’ve made it pretty clear that I don’t like RSS readers. When you subscribe to your favorite sites and read all their articles in a single, text-heavy interface, you’re eliding the beauty and variety of design on the Web.
Angel B's insight:

Reader’s death illustrates a terrible downside of cloud software—sometimes your favorite, most indispensable thing just goes away.

Why the death of Google Reader doesn't bother me that much -- social news has won

Why the death of Google Reader doesn't bother me that much -- social news has won | RSSNews | Scoop.it
A lot of die-hard RSS users are upset that Google has decided to kill off its Google Reader service, but for me Twitter and other platforms based on social news are far superior to any RSS reader and have been for some time.
Angel B's insight:

From a purely informational point of view, social news carries a ton of meta-data along with it, by virtue of the fact that a specific human being chose to tweet a link, or re-tweet one, or comment on one.
