Google Currents is a new tablet app that launched today. It makes reading of syndicated web content easier, faster and more enjoyable than almost any other interface you can imagine. It's like Flipboard but for RSS feeds. Unfortunately, in the current application that ease of use comes at a great cost: Google Currents does away with many of the best parts of the social web. It sings a catchy tune, but there's far less life inside the experience. It's not just a bummer, either - it's a threat to what's great about blogging.

...the 90% are mass consumers that will never use something like Google Reader. The 9% are the power users, reading tons of news per day and probably writing about it as well. Lastly, we have the 1% which are the curators, or sharing whores as I call them and myself. These are the people that read hundreds of posts per day and find some joy in selecting 20+ stories to share with other people. The key to this scenario is that someone needs to be the curators.

So you pull sharing out of Reader and move it to Plus. The Plus model of view content puts things in a Stream -- a specific, accurate metaphor, since it's always moving. New stuff is always at the top. There's no designation between read and unread. It's great if I'm plugged in constantly. It's a nightmare if I do not check it every day, because the always-moving nature of the Stream means I'm always going to miss something important..

While RSS reading as an activity will continue in Google Reader, as of today the sharing features have been "retired" and moved to Google Plus. Also the note-taking features. And because almost all community activity happens on social networks - like Google Plus - that effectively spells the end of any real innovation in the RSS Reader market.

Google Reader, which thanks to its social features (which are going to be removed), is much more than a simple RSS reader for Iranian users. Popularity map for Google Reader shows that Google Reader is the 1st popular website in Iran.

Although there are many other services out there that promise to bubble up relevant content based on my interests, the best product I’ve used to date was the human curation of my Google Reader friends. Not only did my group consistently share the top tech news I’d want to read, they also share those oddball but interesting stories from outside of tech, including humorous cartoons, popular videos, space and science news, parenting tips and other news completely unrelated to tech, but still compelling.

Although many TechCrunch commenters lamented alongside me about the forthcoming disappearance of our favorite “human curators,” when I asked the same question on Google+, the outcome was decidedly different: no one really cares. Except, it appears, Iranians. According to a blog post now making its way around the Web, Google Reader served the Iranian community as a way to get uncensored, unfiltered news outside of government control. And now, that may be over.

There are a lot of really weird things that you can accomplish when you start combining different technologies that exist today. Today, you’ve got email, text messaging, RSS feeds, chat rooms, and countless other text-based methods to communicate. One method of data transmission that I will share with you today is through the use of a very cool Morse code software tool called Morse News, which will read in textual RSS feeds, and actually convert them to morse code for you.

Algo realmente bueno

Google has long neglected Reader as a product. (Hey can someone fix Recommended Items? Please?) Reader was fortunate to have a passionate team that was trying to do the right thing for their users by continuing to innovate and build on the experience, but it's not hard to tell from the official blog that core updates died down a long time ago.

We hope you'll like the new Reader (and Google+) as much as we do, but we understand that some of you may not. Retiring Reader's sharing features wasn't a decision that we made lightly, but in the end, it helps us focus on fewer areas, and build an even better experience across all of Google.

In the next week, we’ll be making some highly requested changes to Google Reader. First, we’re going to introduce a brand new design (like many of Google’s other products) that we hope you love. Second, we’re going to bring Reader and Google+ closer together, so you can share the best of your feeds with just the right circles. As a result of these changes, we also think it's important to clean things up a bit. Many of Reader's social features will soon be available via Google+, so in a week's time we'll be retiring things like friending, following and shared link blogs inside of Reader.
