Why RSS Still Beats Facebook and Twitter for Tracking News [and the comment I submitted]

Why RSS Still Beats Facebook and Twitter for Tracking News [and the comment I submitted] | RSS Circus : veille stratégique, intelligence économique, curation, publication, Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
You’d be forgiven for thinking RSS died off with the passing of Google Reader, but our old friend Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary) still has a role to play on the web of 2017. It’s faster, more efficient, and you won’t have to worry as much about accidentally leaking your news reading habit to all your Facebook friends. Whether you’ve never heard of it before or you’ve abandoned it for pastures new, here’s why you should be using RSS for your news instead of social media.
Serge Courrier's insight:
Thanks for your article, David. Some complements.

- First, RSS is about fine tuning the way we are tracking news. It’s easy for a website to propose finely themed RSS feeds to match reader’s needs and avoid information noise and overload. Look at the New York Times : they have around 20 thematic Twitter accounts and 20 thematic Facebook Pages. But they propose 158 thematic RSS feeds! If your thing is Media & Advertising, Small Businesses, Middle East, Hockey, Space & Cosmos… you have your own feed. You are a company? Look at the Digimind website for example. Their corporate blog have 3 categories and 7 sub-categories. Visitors have access to 11 feeds (main feed, categories and sub-categories). So RSS is about fine tuning the way we are tracking news. Really easy to produce? WordPress which drives more than 25% of websites based on a Content Management Systems (CMS) produces RSS by default. Not only the main feed with all the news, but a feed for every categories, every tags, every author… and event for every searches! The other CMS (Drupal, Joomla, for example) have plugins to help them produce RSS.

- Second, RSS is not a platform but a format. So you are not trapped in newsfeed algorithm like Facebook (note that Twitter propose 100% of news… and in chronological order if you fine tune your settings). A format, so you have the choice between more than hundred RSS readers (Feedly… which is a good platform, is certainly not the only one, and perhaps not the best one!). Cloud ? Mobile ? Desktop ? Self Hosted ? You have a reader for your needs. A format, so everything here is about open access to information, not a proprietary way!

- Third, RSS is sometimes the only way to automatically monitor the information you need. You want to monitor all the medical papers related to “Lymphoma” on Pubmed? RSS! You care about International Space Station Reports from the Nasa? RSS! Avian influenza news from the World Health Organization? RSS!

- Fourth, RSS is about aggregation from différent platform. More and more readers aren’t limited to RSS. Inoreader, for example, let’s you monitor Twitter searches, Facebook Pages (100% of news), Google+ accounts or searches, YouTube Channels, a.s.o.! You can transform Instagram searches in RSS feed with Websta.me! You can even transform news from a website without RSS feeds, Facebook or Twitter account in RSS feed (with Feedity, FetchRSS, Feed43…).

- Fifth, RSS is about filtering. Newsreaders like Feedly or Inoreader now propose to filter feeds with keywords, so you only get the news containing the words you care about.

- Sixth, RSS is about republication. As a simple format, you can easily republish news to social medias and social networks… even to blogs.

But now let speak about the dark side. RSS subscription lost the game where the Like button of Facebook and the Follow button of Twitter, won. RSS subscriptions is sometimes uneasy and techy to find (because of webmasters… that’s the price of open Web). But advanced newsreader will lead you directly to the source you need… if one of their other users already subscribed to it. When I search for Gizmodo in my newsreader, I get more than 20 feeds, from Gizmodo US to Gizmodo Brazil, Gizmodo on Vimeo , Gizmodo on Twitter, on Facebook. I don’t have to look for the feed on the Gizmodo’s website.
