Tony Abbott calls for courts to 'throw the book' at violent attackers

Tony Abbott calls for courts to 'throw the book' at violent attackers | RSA Responsible Service of Alcohol | Scoop.it
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has decried the "insidious" violent culture sweeping Sydney, saying police and the courts should throw the book at offenders.
Bradley Woods's insight:

Describing the attacks as "utterly cowardly", brutal and gratuitous, Mr Abbott said offenders should be treated with "appropriate severity".

"This is a vicious, horrible change, and I think that really the police, the courts, the judges, ought to absolutely throw the book at people who perpetrate this kind of gratuitous, unprovoked violence," he said.

Gerardine Rudolphy's curator insight, January 11, 2014 6:05 PM

Murray Bookchin states that we can not overcome human's domination over the environment unless we address human domination over human. (Harbinger)

With this in mind, and whilst this " "insidious" violent culture sweeping Sydney" is indeed intollerable, is "throwing the book" the solution?

I am reminded of Malala's speech to the UN...  http://youtu.be/KtprX8i2k-Q

What does this say for our responses to workplace inhumanity, to our responses to workplace disputes?  For the inner termoil many of us face...domination of self over self?

Win/lose, either/or, I have yet to read of sustainable and sustaining outcomes from these approaches.  Yet in our increasingly complex world, with the accompanying ambiguity, this world of "maybe" and "it all depends" presents challenges that both frighten and overwhelm our cognitive capacity. Without a collective and individual ability to hold opposing concepts in our minds and see new ways, overcoming this domination will remain a struggle.

LEAVERS WARNED NOT TO TRY AND SCAM LICENSED PREMISES

LEAVERS WARNED NOT TO TRY AND SCAM LICENSED PREMISES | RSA Responsible Service of Alcohol | Scoop.it
Licensed premises in Western Australia want leavers to know that we already know all the tricks in the book when it comes to trying to get into licensed venues and purchasing alcohol. Australian Hotels Association CEO, Bradley Woods, said “Only 5% of alcohol consumed by minors is obtained from licensed premises but we still want to arrest that number”. “WA Hospitality staff are well trained in Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), and know to be extra vigilant in checking identification, especially at leavers time, and will ask for a secondary form of I.D. if unsure”. “The AHA(WA) works closely with its members in preparing for times of increased trade and patron numbers and has encouraged licensed premises to develop house rules specifically for Leavers”. “If juveniles are caught trying to enter licensed premises with fake identification then licensees are encouraged to hand that I.D. to the WA Police”. “The AHA(WA) supports penalties for juveniles caught with or charged with using fake identification. We would hope penalties form a deterrent for young people who are prepared to place livelihoods, jobs and businesses at risk”, Mr Woods said. “Licensed premises are not places for minors so don’t bother trying to scam us”, Mr Woods concluded.

AHA Wants Liquor Licensing Reform In WA

AHA Wants Liquor Licensing Reform In WA | RSA Responsible Service of Alcohol | Scoop.it

Ahead of a review of the WA Liquor Control Act expected in early November, the Australian Hotels Association WA (AHA) has called for liquor licensing reforms that encourage professionalism, more responsibility from drinkers and greater confidence for investors to maintain quality hospitality businesses.

Bradley Woods's curator insight, October 20, 2013 9:47 AM

AHA CEO, Bradley Woods, said “We want the WA Liquor Control Act to enable and support a vibrant and diverse hospitality sector and reinforce that WA has some of the best run and safest licensed premises in Australia.

“The law must hold consumers accountable to behave and drink responsibly. We need new laws that make it an offence for a person to be drunk on licensed premises and strengthen Police barring powers to include people in places around licensed premises.

“However, the public also needs protection against WA Police
lobbying to change the definition of drunk from ‘impaired’ to “affected”. This change could mean a single sip of alcohol ‘affects’ a person, according to a health and legal definition and result in vexatious convictions in unreasonable circumstances.

“The AHA wants Western Australia to drop the 1950’s restriction of closing on Sundays at 10.00 pm and instead allow small bars and hotels to remain open until midnight, in line with Monday to Saturday trading.

“The AHA has also called for a reduction in red tape and a better balance between consumer needs and the limitations put in place by health agencies and the Police” said Mr Woods
