Strategies for Developing Critical Thinking in EFL

Strategies for Developing Critical Thinking in EFL | Bilingual Education Platform | Scoop.it
This paper focuses on three sets of research-supported teaching strategies which are useful in promoting CT and applicable to EFL classrooms; that is, explicit instruction, teacher questioning, as well as active and cooperative learning strategies. Meanwhile, common features of effective CT instruction are discussed, which aims to illuminate instructional strategies for CT at a macro level.

Please do stop testing....

There are a number of things that will remain unchanged, according to some authors, until 2060,....

The change requires time, imagination, in-depth analysis and, ideally, a budget of some sort.

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's curator insight, August 14, 2015 1:10 PM

My hope is that teachers will make learning personalized rather than standardized for everyone.

My hope is you are ready for the challenges as well as the failure.

Making mistakes is a way to learn. It’s not about the disaster; it’s how you respond to the failure.

And finally my hope is that your school is different from most of the current transactional learning models, where the students are consumers of education.

Lastly, I hope for people to be just educational learners fitted in transformational learning approach with opportunity for active, creative and profound personal development.

Jackie GERSTEIN: I absolutely love planning lessons from scratch.  I just got a job teaching technology units for a summer camp for elementary age students. I can design and teach whatever I want – planning for a different theme each week. Some of the themes I am planning are: Expanding and Showing Your Personal Interests Through Blogging, Photos, and Videos; Coding and Creating Online Games; Tinkering and Making – Simple Robotics; Hacking Your Notebook; and Creating Online Comics, Newspapers, and Magazines.  I have begun the process of planning these classes through reflecting on what the lessons will look like.

The academic achievement gap in poverty schools coupled with the pressure of school ranking based upon standardized tests causes many educators to focus mainly on the academic needs of students.  many of our poverty students lack the Emotional Intelligence that provides an avenue for academic success.  We must build an awareness of emotional intelligence and then build this in our students just as we build their cognitive intelligence
