Do you ever ask people for directions anymore? Or do you prefer to ask them, “What’s the address?” and just plug it into your smartphone instead? Because that’s what I do.

Two nights ago, I was filling up my gas tank in southeastern Tennessee, when a man pulled up in a red truck and asked for directions. As I tried to explain, I realized I didn't know any street names, and so I resorted to using landmarks.

 

After explaining that he would need to drive past the Porker's bar-b-que pit; through the 3rd stoplight; and turn left just before the walmart, the man looked at me a little blankly and said, "Do what now?"

The new buzz word is native advertising, and specialty retailers and their marketing teams will increasingly engage customers with content marketing.

 

In addition to traditional approaches like banners and coupons, marketers are connecting people via online content: blog posts, white papers, webinars, podcasts, slideshows, videos, local destination reviews, gear reviews and suggestions, etc...

 

Using creative, inspirational, useful content is allowing specialty retailers to engage their customers in the outdoor lifestyle. Providing people with experience and information is about the most important thing an outdoor retailer can do to engage customers and build loyalty.
