Si acudimos a las fuentes clásicas descubrimos rápidamente el aprecio de los romanos por el pescado fresco, principalmente para ser ofrecido en los banquetes lujosos a sus invitados. Para ello era necesaria la destreza de unos pescadores (piscatores) que desde pequeños aprendían el oficio y utilizaban unos sistemas de pesca que no distaban mucho de los empleados en la actualidad.
