El cuidado de la barba y el cabello de un romano corría a cargo del tonsor. Se trataba de un asunto al que se concedía suma importancia, hasta el punto de que un hombre con el cabello mal cortado caía en el más espantoso ridículo y era objeto de mofa.  El romano que era lo bastante rico como para tener estos barberos-peluqueros entre el personal de servicio doméstico, se ponía en sus manos cada mañana y después nuevamente a lo largo del día en caso de que fuera necesario. Los que no podían costear los servicios de uno privado, acudían a diversas horas, con la frecuencia precisa, a una de las innumerables barberías o tonstrinae. Muchas de estas tiendas, abiertas desde el amanecer hasta la octava hora (más o menos la una de la tarde), estaban localizadas en las inmediaciones del Circo Máximo. Otra alternativa eran los barberos ambulantes que ofrecían sus servicios en la calle para los clientes más humildes.
