Roland Aira TR-8

Roland Aira TR-8 | Roland Aira TR-8 Collection | Scoop.it
Can Roland's new drum machine live up to the hype?
Meredith Edelson's insight:

This article discusses and reviews the Roland Aira TR-8. The new line of Aira products have been awaited eagerly by many people with great hopes that this will be a new classic in the making. The evolved line consists of the TR-8 Rhythm Performer TB-3 Bass synth, system-1 'Plug-out synth and VT-3 vocal transformer.

Pros: Like the original TR-808 and TR-909, it captures the sound and feel genuinely. It contains 32-bit, 96kHz analogue circuit behavior modeling engine, with an output per instrument over USB. It is also solidly built with no crashing, with innate performance-orientated interface. It also has high resolution audio/MIDI interface. Contains its iconic drum sounds.

Cons: Many people have argued the debate between analogue vs. digital. The debate is that digital can't sound as good as analogue "when done right". And this drum machine is indeed digital, so many people are discouraging the use of it. But, Roland hopes to put these notions to rest. Another con is that there is no ability to record parameter changes and it lacks track solo and undo functions.

I have never used the Roland Aira TR-8 or the originals so I cannot express my opinion on it. However, from what I've seen and researched about it, it seems like a must-have and a really innovative piece of technology for producers.

Meredith Edelson's insight:

This article discusses Roland's redefined 808, 909 and 303 instruments.  Roland's product manager Sean Montgomery states, "What we didn't want to do was make a complete replica of the old machines. We've sought to build something that reproduces the sound of the old instrument, but today's musicians can use live." However Roland is not the only company to upgrade their instruments. Like Korg, they have created popular new ones like the Kaoss Pad, and developed a virtual version available in app form for the iPad. This article is credible because it follows all of the 10 C's.

Roland TR-8 Aira "Evolution of the TR-808 Drum Machine" at Soundsliveshop.com

Meredith Edelson's insight:

This is a brief video discussing the evolution of the TR-808 drum machine, which had started developing in 1980. The initial use of this was to make a rhythm machine for backing tracks, but people began to use this rhythm machine as a lead instrument, like a guitar or piano. Like every invention you need to evolve it and upgrade from time to time, which leads to the new line from TR-8 Aira collection. I would say this video is credible. The Youtube page has 1,160,247 views and 705 subscribers.
