Microsoft: Don't Get 'Scroogled' By Google Search Results

Microsoft: Don't Get 'Scroogled' By Google Search Results | Rock Hill, SC Search Engine News | Scoop.it

On Wednesday, Microsoft began running a national ad campaign warning users to avoid being “Scroogled” by Google search results that have been influenced by paid placement.

“So for this holiday season, we just want to make sure shoppers know that when searching for that perfect gift for Cousin Harry on Google Shopping, the results they are seeing are partially optimized to benefit Google’s revenue, not a shopper’s pocketbook,” Microsoft's Nichols wrote. “If this practice has you concerned, then please try Bing for an honest search.”

Social Media and Facebook | Business 2 Community

Social Media and Facebook | Business 2 Community | Rock Hill, SC Search Engine News | Scoop.it

"You should keep your profiles personal and create a page for your business. An example of a niche online business page can be seen here. These guys run a small software company and do a good job at getting followers in their niche because of their page. Pages are more customizable than groups, and you can have an unlimited number of fans.

The best part is that Google indexes pages.

All fan pages are public. Your page will show up in the Google’s search results if someone searches for your company or for keywords that you cover in your page. “If you are looking to build a brand and market your company, you will want a fan page, hands down,” says Shama. It allows for a lot more freedom and visibility when building your Facebook community".

Google Algorithm Changes Benefit Directory Sites at the Expense of Local Businesses | ClickZ

Google Algorithm Changes Benefit Directory Sites at the Expense of Local Businesses | ClickZ | Rock Hill, SC Search Engine News | Scoop.it

Based on the fact that the local search results continue to favor directories, listing aggregators, etc., it's time to adjust your local strategy. First, review your local website traffic generation over the past few months: has it declined from last year/quarter? If yes, take a look at your specific organic search traffic to see if that is the root cause of any decrease. If yes, review your website content to ensure the content is optimized with localization (city, town, neighborhood, etc.) keywords and phrases. Review your website's local inbound links: do you have links from local sources like the chamber of commerce, business partners, the BBB, etc.?

Google Is About To Make Apple's Siri Look Like A Joke

Google Is About To Make Apple's Siri Look Like A Joke | Rock Hill, SC Search Engine News | Scoop.it

That's a bummer if you're still bullish on Siri. I think the core function of these virtual assistants is to intelligently deliver the answer you're looking for. Siri isn't as good at doing that as Google is.

So when Google brings its stellar voice search to Apple's devices in a few days, it's going to make Siri look like the dumpy beta product Apple claims it is.

7 Is The New 10? Google Showing Fewer Results & More From Same Domain

7 Is The New 10? Google Showing Fewer Results & More From Same Domain | Rock Hill, SC Search Engine News | Scoop.it

"It looks as if Google is testing a move away from showing the traditional 10 listings to only displaying seven, and it also appears that it’s even easier than ever for one site to dominates all those results.

Why only 20% and not all the results? It seems that Google is tying the new display format to whether “sitelinks” appear with listings".

Searchers Don’t Want Social in Their SERPs [Study]

Searchers Don’t Want Social in Their SERPs [Study] | Rock Hill, SC Search Engine News | Scoop.it

In identifying a lack of perspective on the layout choices of Google and Bing, we developed a methodology to extract the opinions of searchers about search layouts for queries that include social and universal results.

From The Article: "With the continued evolution of the SERPs and ever more content -- both in quantity and variety -- making its way into the search results, it is important to occasionally step back and gauge how searchers feel about the changes. Thus far, it seems searchers do not want or benefit from the inclusion of social in the SERPs.

If forced to choose a social-SERP layout style, they would choose Bing social results, which are set off to the side rather than directly mixed in with the search results.

When it comes to universal, searchers prefer Google’s layout over Bing’s".
