CMRE, a key element in hosting sea challenges, prepares for two intense weeks of competitions

CMRE, a key element in hosting sea challenges, prepares for two intense weeks of competitions | Robots in Higher Education | Scoop.it

From 20 September to 3 October 2014 CMRE will host SAUC-E for the fifth year in a row andeuRathlon sea robotic challenge for the first time.

The NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (part of the NATO Science and Technology Organization) confirms and increases its commitment to foster a new generation of robotic engineers.
In September 2014, in addition to the Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge - Europe (SAUC-E) hosted for the fifth year in a row in CMRE's sheltered harbour, the first euRathlon sea robotic competition will be held the following week.

Each year SAUC-E challenges multidisciplinary University teams (consisting at least of 75% students members) to design and build Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) capable of performing realistic missions. The students' AUVs must perform a series of tasks autonomously facing real life conditions such as limited visibility in the sea, with no control, guidance or communication from a person or from any off-board computer including GPS systems. This 9th edition will be held from 20 to 26 September 2014

Alan Winfield's Web Log: Soft Robotics in Space

Alan Winfield's Web Log: Soft Robotics in Space | Robots in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Space robotics is understandably conservative. When the cost of putting a robot on a planet, moon or asteroid runs into billions we need to be sure the technology will work. And with very long project lifetimes - spanning decades from engineering design to on-planet robot exploration - it's a long hard road from the research lab to the real off-world use for new advances in robotics.
