Rethink Robotics is Freeing Next Gen Robots from their Cages

Rethink Robotics is Freeing Next Gen Robots from their Cages | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

When the Czech writer Karel Capek started working on his science fiction play R.U.R., he asked his brother Josef what he should call the human-like machines at the center of the play. Josef, who was a poet, thought of robota, the Czech word for forced labor, and told Karel to call them robots. ..Read More....

Amazon Picking Challenge

Amazon Picking Challenge | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

Amazon is able to quickly package and ship millions of items to customers from a network of fulfillment centers all over the globe. This wouldn't be possible without leveraging cutting-edge advances in technology. Amazon's automated warehouses are successful at removing much of the walking and searching for items within a warehouse. However, commercially viable automated picking in unstructured environments still remains a difficult challenge. In order to spur the advancement of this fundamental technology we are excited to be organizing the first Amazon Picking Challenge at ICRA 2015. It is our goal to strengthen the ties between the industrial and academic robotic communities and promote shared and open solutions to some of the big problems in unstructured automation. To this end the contest will be awarding travel grants to ICRA 2015, practice equipment, and a large prize pool for the competition winners (through Amazon, in additional to any other IEEE or ICRA grants). ..Read More....

Students dive into designing and developing autonomous RoboBoat vehicles with Raspberry Pi’s

Students dive into designing and developing autonomous RoboBoat vehicles with Raspberry Pi’s | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it
Students dive into designing and developing autonomous RoboBoat vehicles By Sergio Biagioni For the past year, 13 student teams have been designing and developing autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) to compete against one another in the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) 7th Annual International RoboBoat Competition held in July in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The student teams showed off their Aquatic Surface Vehicles (ASVs) in an aquatic obstacle course that included navigating buoys, autonomous docking, channel following, and identifying targets visually, thermally, and acoustically. To make things difficult, all of these tasks had to be performed autonomously. The student teams were given access to MATLAB and Simulink as well as technical support and training prior to the race as part of the MathWorks sponsorship of the AUVSI Foundation competitions. As with other student competitions, a project-based learning initiative like RoboBoat provides a hands-on opportunity for teams to solve real-world engineering problems without a predefined solution. For the AUVSI Foundation RoboBoat competitions, students are faced with the overarching challenge of finding a solution to run the right algorithms as fast and efficiently as possible without overloading the PC. Since students are balancing their work on the teams with their normal...

Someone’s Gotta Do It: This Collaborative Robot Does the Dull Jobs Few Humans Want

Someone’s Gotta Do It: This Collaborative Robot Does the Dull Jobs Few Humans Want | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

A manufacturing robot is hardly chummy chap. Set off from its flesh-and-blood coworkers inside a safety cage, its powerful metal biceps easily lift, weld and shape massive machine parts. People can watch it in awe from a distance, but they better keep away or risk injury.

That’s why, despite the appeal robots have for the human imagination, the machines are still automating only a thin slice of the manufacturing process. “If we want to move on, we have to start asking different questions about automation,” says Jim Lawton, chief marketing officer of Rethink Robotics. His Boston-based company developed a fix for the problem: Baxter, a collaborative robot, or Cobot, which works with people. “We need to free robots from their cages,” Lawton says. ..Read More....
