A Robot In Time Saves - Manufacturing Innovation Blog

A Robot In Time Saves - Manufacturing Innovation Blog | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it
Has robotics as a technology reached maturity and affordability for smaller manufacturers – it seems yes and no.  Years ago future trends in manufacturing frequently imagined completely automated environments and while that hasn’t happened, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology in 2012 [1] identified robotics as one of 11 top cross-cutting technologies important for […

Herding Robots

A new system combines simple control programs to enable fleets of robots — or other “multiagent systems” — to collaborate in unprecedented ways.
Writing a program to control a single autonomous robot navigating an uncertain environment with an erratic communication link is hard enough; write one for multiple robots that may or may not have to work in tandem, depending on the task, is even harder.

The Rise of the Anti-Robots: A Three-Story Steel Beast Explores Harmony Between Humans and Machines | GE Reports

The Rise of the Anti-Robots: A Three-Story Steel Beast Explores Harmony Between Humans and Machines | GE Reports | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

Artist and engineer Johnathan Tippett is a man with a mad vision. He and his team are building Prosthesis, the world’s first human-controlled racing “anti-robot.” Prosthesis is a four-legged steel beast rising three stories high and weighing 7 tons. Unlike ordinary robots, the battery-powered giant requires a human pilot to steer it. “The machine itself is built to race, but it is just as much about the pilot as it is about the technology,” Tippett writes on the crowdsourcing website Indiegogo. “Having no automated controls, its performance is entirely dependent on the person strapped into the cockpit. Piloting Prosthesis will not be easy. It will take focus, skill and athleticism. It will take grit.”
