Manufacturing Gangnam Style - Manufacturing Innovation Blog

Manufacturing Gangnam Style - Manufacturing Innovation Blog | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

Rethink Robotics, the firm that designed and manufactured Baxter the famous industrial robot, has met its match. Robotis’ Bioloid, an educational DIY robotics set, has developed a new, hipper cousin to Baxter that dances – Gangnam Style.  And no wonder. Baxter is a “serious robot” who has a job at Vanguard Plastics, a Connecticut manufacturer. He doesn’t have time to goof off.

Lego Robot Folds and Flings a Paper Airplane

Lego Robot Folds and Flings a Paper Airplane | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it
NXTLOG user hknssn13 built this amazing paper airplane machine. My favorite part is the 4th stage, where four linear actuators make the final folds in the airplane. It looks sick when the entire assembly rises up!

R2-D2 4 ICU: GE to Develop “Intelligent” Hospital Robot System to Sort and Sterilize Surgical Tools | GE Reports

R2-D2 4 ICU: GE to Develop “Intelligent” Hospital Robot System to Sort and Sterilize Surgical Tools | GE Reports | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

The Institute of Medicine estimates that tens of thousands of Americans die needlessly every year from avoidable medical errors, including infections acquired during surgery. GE and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have now teamed up to change that. They will develop an “intelligent” system using robots, computer vision and automatic identification technologies like RFID tags to fetch, sort, and sterilize surgical tools. The system could save lives, and money.

Rethink Robotics :: Meet Baxter

Rethink Robotics :: Meet Baxter | Robotics in Manufacturing Today | Scoop.it

Baxter is an entirely new type robot that is redefining the way robots can be used in manufacturing environments. It performs a variety of repetitive production tasks – all while safely and intelligently working next to people.  How?  Baxter exhibits behavior-based ‘common sense,’ capable of sensing and adapting to its task and its environment. It requires no complex programming or costly integration. And with its uniquely low price point, Baxter provides a compelling alternative to low-cost offshoring for manufacturers of all sizes.

In my opinion this is one of the directions that robotics should be heading in, many people would say that robotics such as this would always put people out of work and this arguement has been made by people for years and while initially it may be true society has now i believe adapted to this idea and will continue to adapt as robotics such as this make life intensly easyer for the average worker in the long run, also in the long run it forces society to adapt to situations where the jobs are obsolete, lifting the overall education levels to provide further advancements in all fields.

I love Mindstorms and Lego Robotics. As a middle school teacher in the 80's I'd hold sumo wrestling robot tournaments for the kids. All teams started with the same tools.  Winners were the best pushers!  Motivation was off the charts.
