3 Reasons Why You Should Pick Up Coding

3 Reasons Why You Should Pick Up Coding | Robotics and GBL Biosphere | Scoop.it
t’s official: coding is all the rage today. We are living in a world where apps dominate every aspect of our lives and are disrupting the way we do things. And creating these apps require—you guessed it—coding know-how.

With the rising prominence of ‘superstar’ programmers such as Bill Gates and Sheryl Sandberg, coding has captured the attention and imagination of many youth, who are beginning to recognise its value. According to this Microsoft study, a resounding majority of students in Asia Pacific want to see coding as a core subject in school, believing it is instrumental to helping them acquire essential 21st century skills necessary to thrive in the fast-changing world of tomorrow.

While some may argue that being a programmer is not for everyone, we can all agree that coding has some life lessons that we can benefit from, especially children and young people. Here are three reasons why you should get started coding

Teach your toddlers how to code with Cubetto, the wooden robot

Teach your toddlers how to code with Cubetto, the wooden robot | Robotics and GBL Biosphere | Scoop.it

"The educational acronyms of the 21st century look a bit different from those of previous generations. The “Three R’s” (which, confusingly enough, weren’t even R’s to begin with) have since largely been replaced by STEM, and parents of the newest generation are doing everything they can to better prepare their progeny for success in an increasingly digitized world.

Key to that success appears to be an early start — an extremely early start — when it comes to learning important skills like computer programming and other technical talents. Here to help is Cubetto, and adorable little wooden robot that is specifically designed for pre-literate children ages 3 and older that teaches the basics of computer programming and STEM, sans screen. Get ‘Em Started! Use These Resources to Teach Coding to Kids | Make: | Robotics and GBL Biosphere | Scoop.it
Teaching kids to code offers a lot of challenges that you don’t run into when instructing adults. Kids don’t have a ton of real world experience, so a lot of analogies fly over their heads. Abstract thinking can take a lot more effort, so you need to keep things more concrete. Many kids have extremely short attention spans, especially in groups. And if there isn’t a cool payoff almost immediately, they are going to get bored and zone out. All the lecturing in the world won’t get the lesson into their heads at that point.

When teaching children programming, the goal is to empower them to understand the everyday systems they already use, and to know they have the skill to pick this kind of stuff up, both now and later in life. Not everyone wants to do software development for a living, no matter how smart of a career choice it is, but programming is creeping more and more into other fields every day.
