"Hours spent at the video gaming console probably train the brain to make better and faster use of visual input, according to Duke University researchers.

“Gamers see the world differently,” said Greg Appelbaum, an assistant professor of psychiatry in the Duke School of Medicine. “They are able to extract more information from a visual scene.”"

The key here is that apparently practice can lower the cognitive costs associated with rapidly switching fro task to task. And that learning can involve the whole visual system, not just attention.

Great comment Michael, and make no mistake, "misuse" will be rampart! Worse, if the recent Prism news has showed anything, we already have no privacy. I think it is inevitable that almost everything we do in public (and even in private) will be recorded... It's terrifying but cameras/GPStracking will/are everywhere and the number is only increasing.

The ideas about the future by Raymond Kurzweil

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Sure it sounds wild, but just think about what we have been able to achieve over the past 50 years alone. We’ve come a long way from colorless television sets and sending white guys to the moon. These days we’re launching rovers to Mars and 3D printing sh*t out. Now that’s a leap.

Just look how addictive consumer behavior is for a new Apple product.

Sure you can cop the latest iPhone or Mac, but the newer and improved version will always be released in the next couple of months. Similarly, all technology will keep replacing itself at a faster and faster rate until it all becomes a blur. Everything is becoming more efficient and compact and we can expect to see this trend continue until it isn’t even tangible.

Is it that crazy to assume that technological advances will not only continue, but grow and flourish exponentially over the next 50 years? Have you even stopped to think how crazy Google Glass actually is? Or even self-driving cars?

We are at the forefront of the tech revolution. And we need not look further than Dr. Raymond Kurzweil, who is leading the way. His insight into what will happen to us over the course of the next half century are humbling to say the least.

3D printers give rise to 'desktop manufacturing' | Technology & Science | CBC News

3D printers give rise to 'desktop manufacturing' | Technology & Science | CBC News | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

Customizable objects from plastic dollhouse furniture to medical prosthetics can now be designed and made by almost anyone at the press of a 3D print button, and this rise of "desktop manufacturing" is going to lead to an "explosion of new stuff," predicts Chris Anderson, author of Makers: The New Industrial Revolution.

"As easy as it is right now to publish a blog post, it is getting nearly that easy to make a physical thing. You don't need skills, you just need an idea," Anderson said during a recent keynote address at the Canada 3.0 digital media conference in Toronto.

In the past five years, digital technologies such as 3D modeling software and 3D printers have become cheaper and accessible enough for ordinary people to make prototypes of objects that, until recently, could only be made by those who owned factories or were skilled machinists.

"Now, once they have that prototype, they don't need to buy a factory, they can just upload it to a factory in the same way that you upload your ideas to an information factory called YouTube or the Wordpress servers or just the internet," Anderson said.

Manufacturing, he added, is "turning into a button in your browser."

Humans With Amplified Intelligence Could Be More Powerful Than AI_ | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

With much of our attention focused the rise of advanced artificial intelligence, few consider the potential for radically amplified human intelligence (IA). It’s an open question as to which will come first, but a technologically boosted brain could be just as powerful — and just as dangerous – as AI.

Brown University Creates Online Course for High School Students | NYTimes

Brown University Creates Online Course for High School Students | NYTimes | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

by Michael A. Wilner

"...in what seems to be the first major effort by a university to tailor a massive open online course, or MOOC, specifically to high school students,Brown University is preparing to offer a free online engineering class with the aim of teaching high school students about the merits and challenges of the field.

"f the program is truly unprecedented, as Brown’s team has come to believe, it could start a trend of directly advising high school students and their teachers on specific curriculums, motivated in part by the hypercompetitive college admissions process.

“The real goal here is to get students interested in engineering to better understand engineering, so that they can make good decisions about what they do in the next step,” said Wendy Drexler, director of online development at Brown. “If they decide that they’re interested in engineering and they want to apply to different engineering schools, we want them to have all the information they need.”

"The course is based more on activities and research assignments than on video lectures, in an effort to challenge students to actually build something, Dr. Drexler said. Students will also receive guidance on what types of courses they should look for when applying to colleges.

The connection between concentration and creativity

The connection between concentration and creativity | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

Our brain’s prefrontal cortex is thought to filter out irrelevant thoughts.  This helps us concentrate better in a chaotic world.   But maybe this isn’t always helpful.  Like when we want to think creatively.

In fact, switching this filter off may actually increase “outside of the box” thinking.
