Los niños y el Internet: la nueva sociología de la infancia y el uso de métodos visuales

Los niños y el Internet: la nueva sociología de la infancia y el uso de métodos visuales | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

Innovating Pedagogy – Dynamic Assessment

Innovating Pedagogy – Dynamic Assessment | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it
The basic premise of dynamic assessment is that it is important to assess students’ potential to learn rather than measure what they have just done. Testing acts as a diagnostic tool that enables a teacher or the computer to offer guidance to the student during the assessment process. Thus, it differs from conventional testing in both assessing and guiding the progress of the student. The relationship between the assessor and student is not neutral because the whole purpose is to find suitable ways to promote student learning. A role of the assessor is to identify barriers to the student’s success and then apply an appropriate strategy to overcome the difficulties. Assessment and intervention combine in the process of dynamic assessment.

As well as being a way to offer direct support to the learner, dynamic assessment can inform the teacher about topics and skills that many students are finding difficult and so help the process of re-designing and improving the teaching. It can also motivate learners to reflect on their learning journeys and decide on which skills they need to improve. It is particularly valuable for developing 21st-century skills of reasoning, problem-solving, decision making, leadership, creativity and literacy.

Do you want to become a more effective educator? Be an open book

Do you want to become a more effective educator? Be an open book | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it
I’ve been an educator for twenty years. As I was participating in a lively Twitter chat recently, the moderator asked what professional development advice we would give to first year educators. I had no problem thinking about my own failures and challenges through the years and listing off a half-dozen tips. However, if I had to rank them, the one that I would put at the top of the list is this. Be an open book.

I’ve written about my first weeks as a middle school educator years ago, when I struggled with classroom management. What made the difference between my success and failure in those early weeks and that first year was one critical decision. Almost everything in me wanted to close my classroom door, hide my limitations as an educator, and hope that it would go away or that I would figure it out on my own. That decision would have ended my career as an educator. Instead, thanks to a wonderfully open and non-judgmental principal, I found the courage to walk into his office, explain my situation, my fears, my limitations as a teacher. I asked for help.

Tony Bates: Resources on e-portfolios

Tony Bates: Resources on e-portfolios | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

Tony Bates:

"In education, a ‘portfolio’ refers to a personal collection of information describing, documenting and recording a person’s achievements and learning. Portfolios are used for many different purposes such as a tool for evaluating leaning, for accreditation of prior experience, for continuing professional development, to assist a job application, or for a certification of competences acquired through a course or from work experience . An educational portfolio is mainly used to encourage personal reflection and involves the exchange of ideas and feedback. Many people have already used some kind of portfolio. Most of them have built a portfolio to collect evidence required to get certificates or to show what they have learned in a concrete situation or training. The development of information and learning technologies has led to the development of digital portfolios or electronic portfolios, commonly referred as e-Portfolios."

A guide to Student-Led Conferences

A guide to Student-Led Conferences | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it
In the student-led conference format, students and teachers prepare together, and then students lead the conference while teachers facilitate. “The triad then sits together to review and discuss the work and the student’s progress. The message, once again, is that the students are responsible for their own success.” Student-led conference models vary, but the premise is the same: “This is the student’s moment to share his or her reflections on achievements and challenges.”

6 design principles of Connected Learning

6 design principles of Connected Learning | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it
In 2015, no one should be hurting for compelling ed content. Sites like edutopia, The Tempered Radical, Langwitches, Justin Tarte, Cool Cat Teacher, Grant Wiggins’ blog, and dozens of others offer outstanding reading on a daily basis to help you improve the things that happen in your classroom. (And this list is frustratingly incomplete–they’re just the sites on my radar that I’ve been reading since I entered education.)

A bit more “fringe” are sites like TeachThought, Jackie Gerstein’s UserGeneratedEducation, the Connected Learning Alliance and DMLCentral.net, MindShift, and so many more–“fringe” due to their thinking that seems as interested in understanding what’s possible in a modern learning environment as they are what is. Pursuing excellence in the box while demanding to know what’s going on outside that box.

You could even call this kind of content less immediately practical when you’re just Googling for a lesson idea for tomorrow, but there’s room for everyone in a digital and infinite world. There are already fantastic sites that offer worksheets and classroom management strategies and assessment policies. We’ll do that from time to time, but near and dear to our mission at TeachThought is to rethink learning in a modern world, however we choose to characterize those modern qualities.

Along with the others, CLA is on our short list of thought leaders that help push us to think about how education is changing in a modern world, which is why we’ve shared some of their models in the past, including their iconic Connected Learning model. Recently, we also discovered that they’ve shared the design principles of that model, along with a description of each.

These ideas appear below–and of course, check out CLA and DML for further reading.

5 strategies for better teacher professional development

5 strategies for better teacher professional development | Robótica Educativa! | Scoop.it

Just as a teacher has to create conditions that support and encourage student success, school districts have to support teachers’ professional development.

Today, professional development runs the gamut from one-shot workshops to more intensive job-embedded professional development, which has teachers learn in the day-to-day environment in which they work rather than getting pulled out to attend an outside training.

However, the National School Boards Association’s Center for Public Education report, “Teaching the Teachers,” notes that most professional development today is ineffective because it neither changes teaching practices nor improves student learning.

Professional development for teachers can fall short in numerous ways, including:

  • Too many (and sometimes conflicting) goals and priorities competing for teachers’ time, energy, and attention.
  • Unrealistic expectations of how much time it will take schools and teachers to adopt and implement goals.
  • Professional development training events that are inappropriate in size, scope, or structure to support learning new ideas or skills. Gathering 100 teachers into one room for a training event will never give them the time they need to reflect on the material, ask questions, listen to their peers, or go through activities to enhance their comprehension.
  • Lack of support for teachers’ implementation of new instructional practices. Research shows there’s an implementation gap in teachers’ professional development. They may learn, understand, and agree with a new idea or technique presented in a workshop, but it’s hard for them to implement that idea without ongoing support.
  • Failure to provide teachers with feedback about how implementing new skills impacts student learning.

RIED. Revista Iberoamericana de Educación a Distancia's curator insight, December 19, 3:54 AM

The Millennial generation is changing the way we learn by urging educational institutions to better adapt to the needs of youth via the incorporation of educational technologies. Based on this premise, we have reviewed key reports concerning the integration of ICTs in education, i.e. with the aim of showing how education is changing, and will change to meet the needs of Millennials with ICT support. The paper concludes that most investment has simply resulted in an increase of computers and increased access to the Internet, e.g. where teachers replicate traditional approaches to education and where e-learning is viewed as being complementary to face-to-face education. Although it may seem that the use of ICTs is not currently revolutionizing learning, it is facilitating the personalization, collaboration and ubiquity of learning.
