DEADLINE: Robert De Niro And Robert Pattinson's 'Idol's Eye' Shuttered

DEADLINE: Robert De Niro And Robert Pattinson's 'Idol's Eye' Shuttered | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Benaroya Pictures has shut down the Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson, and Rachel Weisz heist thriller Idol’s Eye, just as filming was set to commence in Toronto. “Due to the criteria for financing not being met by producers, Benaroya Pictures has formally decided to discontinue financing the motion picture titled Idol’s Eye,” the production company said in a statement.

Idol’s Eye was to be director Olivier Assayas’s next film following Cannes entry Clouds of Sils Maria. Benaroya came aboard as producer and financer in May, when De Niro also signed on to star.

Filming was initially slated to begin in October in Chicago and Toronto. Benaroya Pictures, whose films include Margin Call, Kill Your Darlings, and the Werner Herzog’s upcoming Queen of the Desert co-starring Pattinson, say they were forced to shut down production after other producers on the project failed to meet financing deadlines.

Next Rob's Project: What is Idol’s Eye about?

Next Rob's Project: What is Idol’s Eye about? | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

A script ... was based on a 2007 Playboy article called Boosting the Big Tuna, written by reporter Hillel Levin. The story was based on the murders of a crew of guys who robbed the house of Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo’s (AKA “Big Tuna”) in 1978. After the break-in, several guys suspected of the crime were murdered with, well, let’s say extreme prejudice. Some were tortured. There’s a lot more to the story than that; it’s a hell of a gangland saga, with violence and a big multi-layered investigation.

So where does the name Idol’s Eye come from? The Idol’s Eye is a big diamond — a big famous diamond, in fact. In the ’70s it was owned by a Chicago jeweler. It was never stolen, and was not part of the Big Tuna robbery. But there’s a connection. The owner of the diamond was Harry Levinson, a mob-connected guy. And in 1977 a thief named John Mendell targeted Levinson for his diamond, and planned a huge heist of the rock that was only partially successful. John Mendell is one of the guys who broke into Big Tuna’s place a year later.

So what story is Assayas telling? We’d assume that De Niro is going to play Accardo, and Pattinson will be Mendell. But the title suggests this could be more about the attempt to steal the Idol’s Eye than the Accardo robbery. Both are big, great stories, with potential for some excellent cinematic flavor.

If Robert Pattinson steps on a twig is the world apt to hear it?

If Robert Pattinson steps on a twig is the world apt to hear it? | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

I did not know that teenage idol worshipers have a hard time letting go of their saviors....

The roles actors take on in franchises tend to transcend the screens that separate them from their audiences. Many teenage movie goers tend to transpose their lives with those of their screen idols. Fantasies are apt to do that. Lately, when fans of characters are satisfied with the actor who is chosen to play their favorite characters, they become mixed with the madness of summer block buster and their own real life summer romances. This mixture of fact with fantasy can become toxic. Edward Cullen has become Pattinson's Frankenstein...

One wonders if the roles Pattinson has played this far have given him enough distance from his own surreal life as a celebrity...

He himself seems to carry with him an enigma that he must constantly deny. If you see his shaved head in THE ROVER, you see a man trying to deny the power that Twilight bestowed upon him. Yet that power helps the directors who decide to help him. He helps them. By his own admission, “I don’t promote their films that much”. Yet his presence brings the bucks.....and the ever weary fan base of his brings the tabloids. NOW THATS POWER.

Anton Corbijn Talks About Robert Pattinson and 'Life'

Anton Corbijn Talks About Robert Pattinson and 'Life' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Q: In your films you’ve portrayed talented men who burn out young – ... now James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock. Are you interested in the myth-making process that happens around these guys?
Anton Corbijn: If anything, it’s unmasking because I always bring it down to very normal life. In photography I can imagine that people think I make images iconic, but with films I don’t think that’s the case. The film with James Dean is actually about the photographer. He’s the lead role, they just share screen time. I had a similar experience when I was young in Holland. I became the photographer of somebody who became the biggest rock star we ever had there (Herman Brood), so it was interesting to see how that balance works when I thought I was helping him and he probably thought he was helping me. It’s the same with this story.
Q: Was it an easy process casting Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan in your upcoming film Life?
Anton Corbijn: Dane didn’t want to take a meeting with me initially, as he couldn’t see himself in James Dean’s shoes. But he was persuaded by a mutual friend, and said yes in the end. He’s fabulous, a very good actor. Rob was interested in the film because he really wants to prove himself and for me that was great for that role. If you look at the roles he’s taking on – like the ones with Cronenberg – he really wants to do very different, non-mainstream films and get out of that pigeonhole.

Olivier Assayas Talks About Meeting Rob and Financing 'Idol's Eye'

Olivier Assayas Talks About Meeting Rob and Financing 'Idol's Eye' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

The veteran French filmmaker shares his thoughts on the nature of celebrity and how greater resources impact his work.

Several excerpts of interview:

Q: Your next movie will co-star Robert Pattinson. Do you feel similarly about him?
A: I met him in London at a very early stage before I shot "Sils Maria" while I was still working on the screenplay for my next film, but I knew I wanted him for the leading role. We had a long conversation in London about the project.

Q: Most of the financing came from ARTE, right? And for the next one?

A: No. It's a different system of financing, American financing. That'll be the first time for me.

Q: How's it going so far?
A: Honestly, I'm a little nervous about it at this stage. You have to deal with business types — movie business types: lawyers, bankers, accountants, all these kinds of other types you just don't want to spend five minutes with. The thing is, I make movies because I can choose the people who I spend time with. I don't have to deal with the bullshit of everyday job stuff. So I don't want to end up making movies with people I'm not interested in. People I'm bored with who don't share my values and so forth. So I'm just trying to structure things in ways that I have to deal the producer of the film and that's it. I don't want to have conversations with anyone else.

The Guardian | Robert Pattinson: ‘The Rover felt like a dream'

The Guardian | Robert Pattinson: ‘The Rover felt like a dream' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Several excerpts:

“I’m quite good at doing meetings,” he says. “If I’m just meeting someone about a job I’m like a dog, especially if my agent’s said to me: ‘A lot of people want this job.’ Then I’m like: ‘Oh yeah? Then I will do anything to get it!’” What’s his technique? “I don’t know, I just become a bullshit artist!” he laughs. “That’s when I start acting! I’m really much better at doing it when the cameras aren’t rolling …”

“For whatever reason, I think there’s something profoundly satisfying about being able to watch something you’ve done afterwards, or to just do a scene and feel like: ‘Oh, I just had an out-of-body experience for a second!’Just for one second. And generally people don’t even notice. It feels literally like you’ve been asleep for a second.” He recalls such a moment while shooting this film. “It’s not the biggest scene, it’s not even in the movie, it was the rehearsal. And me and Guy had just been going so nuts – we’d been out in the desert and we’d become like crazy homeless people. And I turned around and looked at him and just realised actually, we’re not acting any more.” He laughs. “And why did that feel so good? It’s so weird.”

Occasionally he tries to write something himself. “I was trying to write a play the other day and I showed it to my assistant and didn’t quite realise how bad it was.” He laughs and laughs. “I was writing it totally by myself in the middle of the night thinking: ‘This is how you do it! You just stay up all night and keep writing!’ She came in the next morning, and I’d been up all night writing. I said to her: ‘You have to read this! It’s amazing!’” He could tell it was perhaps not, he says, from her facial expressions as she read. “And then she said: ‘It’s not in English … and half the time you haven’t even put the character names in so it’s just a stream of consciousness …’”
But he would like to be in a play, he says. “Something in a really small theatre. I don’t think I could do something on Broadway … But I’d quite like to do something kind of shocking.”

'Queen Of the Desert' Director Werner Herzog Talks about the Movie and Rob's Part with 'Bande à Part' Magazine | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

English Translation by Pattinson Art Work :

Q: Can you tell us more about your next movie 'Queen Of The Desert' ?
A: In less than ten days, I will start the mixing. The filming and editing are completed and I should be able to put an end to the movie in the first days of december.
I don't know where or when it will be shown for the first time.
Q: The cast is really impressive : Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson...
A: They all really wanted to work with me. I was asked why I chose Pattinson. It's not a big part, and it matched perfectly. I needed an englishman who still looks like a schoolboy but which is very smart. He plays Lawrence of Arabia, but at the age of 22, on an archeological site. Kidman, who plays the main role is wondering what that kid has to do in a place like this, and an archeologist tells her that this kid has a PhD.
Pattinson is really good in that role. He is a smart man and the choice was quite natural.

FKA Twigs Talks about Robert Pattinson in Interview with The Guardian

FKA Twigs Talks about Robert Pattinson in Interview with The Guardian | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

With her hypnotic videos, provocative album and singular image, FKA Twigs, AKA Tahliah Barnett, is 2014’s most intriguing new pop talent. Over a tearful lunch in New York, she talks to Tom Lamont (The Guardian).

Excerpt from The Guardian:

"Pattinson has joined her in these early stages of her US tour, a sweet gesture that has unfortunately launched a grim game of cat and mouse around the city, the pair trailed everywhere by a school of paparazzi. <...>. She doesn’t want to go in to specifics of her romantic life (who would, after two months of gossip-page commentary?) but she says something rather lovely about the compromises required of this new relationship. I think it’s worth quoting in full.

“That side of my life [the paparazzi] is nothing to do with me. That’s, like… That is the… side of life of the man that I love. And… when that started happening I had to… Because that is the opposite of who I am as a person, and it was weird… Then I had to sit back and have a conversation with myself and I had to say: that is something really horrible. No, not horrible, I don’t find it horrible, it’s something that’s very challenging. I look uncomfortable because I am uncomfortable. But then it’s, like, is this person in my life worth that? And he is, without question. Do you know what I mean? In comparison to how happy I am. And how I feel with him. It’s 100% worth it. Does that make sense?”

It does."

“The Childhood of a Leader” Set to Start Filming in January 2015

“The Childhood of a Leader” Set to Start Filming in January 2015 | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

The Childhood of a Leader, sold by Protagonist Pictures and co-starring Robert Pattinson, Tim Roth and Berenice Bejo, is in pre-production and is set to shoot in Budapest in January.

The $5m feature is a collaboration between Swedish producer Helena Danielsson, Chris Coen from Unanimous Entertainment (UK) and Antoine de Clermont Tonnerre from Mact Productions (France). Co-producer is Ildiko Kemeny of Pioneer Pictures Hungary.

It marks the feature directorial debut of Corbet, a US actor best known for roles in Melancholia, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Thirteen. More recently, Corbet starred in Cannes titles Saint Laurent, Force Majeure and Clouds of Sils Maria as well as Toronto titles Eden, While We’re Young and Escobar: Paradise Lost.

The Childhood of a Leader is billed as “a chilling fable about the rise of fascism in the 20th Century”.

It tells the story of a young American living in France in 1918 whose father is working for the US government on the creation of the Treaty of Versailles.

What he witnesses helps mould his beliefs and the film bears witness to the birth of a terrifying ego. Martin is to play the boy’s French teacher.

David Cronenberg Has "No Problem Ignoring" Robert Pattinson's 'Twilight' Past - Hollywood Reporter

David Cronenberg Has "No Problem Ignoring" Robert Pattinson's 'Twilight' Past - Hollywood Reporter | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

David Cronenberg's Hollywood-centered family melodrama Maps to the Stars marks the veteran director's second straight film with Twilight alum Robert Pattinson after 2012's Cosmopolis.
Although many still see Pattinson as vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen, Cronenberg told The Hollywood Reporter he could easily look past that.
"I have no problem ignoring that," the director said of Pattinson's Twilight past. "Of course I watched the first Twilight movie just to see what he was like and get a feel for his screen presence and so on and so on…by the time you're on the set, it's just the two of you making movies. You forget your own movies too.'"
Speaking to THR ..., Cronenberg explained that he wanted to work with Pattinson on this movie not only because the director thinks of him as "a wonderful actor" and they "had a good time on Cosmopolis" but also because it provided the opportunity for Pattinson to participate in the sort of ensemble film he'd told Cronenberg he wanted to do.
"He told me that he was scared about Cosmopolis because he had not really wanted to do a movie where he was the lead and had the whole movie on his shoulders," the director explained. "And of course in that movie he's in almost every scene. He said, 'One day I'd love to do an ensemble piece where there are a lot of good actors and [he's] just one of them.'"
When Cronenberg was putting together Maps, he thought of his Cosmopolis star.
