Hay Festival Kells: preview - Telegraph

Hay Festival Kells: preview - Telegraph | Road Tripping | Scoop.it
Kells, the Irish town that gave its name to a famous medieval manuscript, is gearing up to host a Hay festival. Neil Hegarty reports.

A spring morning in the town of Kells, deep in the countryside north-west of Dublin. The grass in St Columba’s churchyard is long and green – and a little wet too. Not that we are wasting time grumbling about damp shoes, for this atmospheric site is keeping us fully occupied.

Sharla Shults's insight:

To all those who have aspirations of tripping all the way to Ireland...

Why I Became a Freegan | Environment on GOOD

Why I Became a Freegan | Environment on GOOD | Road Tripping | Scoop.it
What is an apple? In your kitchen, it’s food, nourishment. At the market, it’s currency, a player in transactions.

Dangling from a tree or baked into a pie, it’s part of our cultural identity, an axis for uniting families and friends around the bounty of the harvest. But what about when it’s sitting under three layers of thick black plastic, in a tower of bulging garbage bags on the curb, waiting for the metallic teeth of the nightly garbage truck? How do we regard this resource that holds such cultural, economic and environmental value when it’s suffocating beneath plastic, tossed away?

Sharla Shults's insight:

When I first started reading this article, I thought YUK! Then, as I read on, I realized it only confirmed what I have been thinking and conversing with my husband lately, "There is too much waste in America!" Not too keen on dumpster diving but sure wish the awareness of all the edible food tossed in the trash could be channeled in a new direction other than simply decaying in a garbage can.

How to get America's most crowded natural wonders to yourself

How to get America's most crowded natural wonders to yourself | Road Tripping | Scoop.it

Some tourist meccas are meant to be savored with a crush of people.

Entering the fray in Times Square, Bourbon Street and every other man-made wonder out there is all part of the experience. No one imagines enjoying Space Mountain or the San Antonio River Walk in solitude.

Then there are the natural wonders. Places that lend themselves to quiet marveling and meditative solitude … if it weren’t for the surging mass of humanity beside you shooting phone video, jockeying for position and thinking exactly what you are: "Imagine this place without crowds."

No, you won’t be getting Bright Angel Trail or Broadway (the one in Mammoth Cave), Yosemite Falls or those in Niagara, for that matter, to yourself these days.

But even at the most magnificently mobbed must-sees of nature, a little local intel can help bring you a step (or quick shuttle ride) closer to that ideal.

America's most amazing hotel pools | Road Tripping | Scoop.it
Sharks, hot springs, mountain vistas, water elevators -- all without having to leave room service delivery range

When temps are brick-oven high and humidity levels surge past "swamp-like," there’s nothing like a quick swim to cool you off during a business trip or vacation.

Throw in monster views, insane settings and ingenious design, and the pool becomes more than just a watering hole. It’s the ultimate place to chill. Literally.

These amazing U.S. hotel pools are the coolest part of any trip.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Here is just one example:

The Joule (Dallas)

Pushing design to its literal edge, this 1927 historic hotel has one ultra-modern feature: a window-walled rooftop infinity pool that sticks out eight feet from the building’s exterior.

Non-acrophobics can swim to the deep end and take in the views of downtown Dallas, 10 stories below.

Take a Trip to Beautiful San Diego, Time-Lapse Style - PetaPixel

Take a Trip to Beautiful San Diego, Time-Lapse Style - PetaPixel | Road Tripping | Scoop.it

Most time-lapses involve long pans over vast landscapes with gorgeous star-filled skies in the background. And while we love those -- if you haven't seen the New Zealand time-lapse we shared recently you’re missing out — we don’t see equally stunning urban time-lapses nearly as often. This is one of the exceptions to that rule.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Titled “Welcome Home,” the video features everything from cityscapes to pounding waves to railway stations — a journey that shows the city of San Diego through the artistic lens of one of its residents.

Awakenings: Kilroy Was Here!

Awakenings: Kilroy Was Here! | Road Tripping | Scoop.it

A funny little scribbled face became a graffiti icon! It has shown up everywhere worldwide, on buildings, on trains, in school books, with autographs, in diaries, on restroom walls, on sidewalks, in subway tunnels, on rocks, on dumpsters, on invitations, in letters, on tee-shirts, on campaign buttons, you name it and probably Kilroy has been there. It is even engraved on the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. Of course, that is not as unusual as it sounds which will be discovered later on.

Sharla Shults's insight:
"The outrageousness of the graffiti was not so much what it said, but where it turned up." ~Charles Paniti, author

10 best free bar snacks in the U.S. | Road Tripping | Scoop.it
Gratis bar food may be a dying tradition in some quarters, but these joints don't care about cost or mess.

Stale, contaminated nuts and pretzels served in a culture dish are standard fare in most bars.

But some establishments across the country aren't only taking their countertop cuisine to new levels -- bomboloni, gougères, croque monsieur! -- they've decided to give it to patrons on the house.

Gratis bar food may be a dying tradition in some quarters, but we found a number of joints that don't care about cost or mess, opting to dry your whistle before they wet it. Here are ten of the finest, for starters. Serve us up your own favorites.

Sharla Shults's insight:

The 8 Best Beer Towns In America: The nation's civic leaders in making, celebrating and, of course, drinking hop juice.

The history of beer in the United States is a rich one dating back to the colonies, when soldiers were paid in spruce beer and cider. From there beer weathered a Revolution, Prohibition and a right turn at Albuquerque before positively exploding with deregulation of the industry through the early 1980s.

America's best coffee shops

America's best coffee shops | Road Tripping | Scoop.it

Coffee culture in America, in the post-World War II era, began with the dark stuff. The "water dressed down in brown," as singer Ani DiFranco once put it — the nitty, gritty, put-the-hair-on-your-chest stuff that would hardly pass for a decent cup of coffee today. And forget the billions of combinations of milks, beans, and flavors you'll find today; back then, it was coffee, black, and no questions asked.

Sharla Shults's insight:

What is a road trip without a stop, or many stops, for coffee!
