2013 TFI Interactive: Loc Dao talks NFB Interactive | Tribeca Film Institute [video] | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it
Loc Dao gives us a look at some of the interactive projects they're currently working on.

After dazzling the TFIi audience last year with his presentation on the National Film Board of Canada's popular interactive project, "Bear 71," Loc Dao, the head of digital content and strategy for English programming at NFB, returned this year to take us through the projects NFB Interactive has been working on since. One that looks like it can hit the level of popularity that "Bear" did is "Circa 1948" by Stan Douglas, a 3D historical augmented reality app that captures the stories and architecture of a transitional post-war era Canada."

Creating blockbuster worlds: an interview with Jeff Gomez [#transmedia] | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

With media becoming pervasive and every one of us capable of making some degree of noise, how do you cut through a 'chaotic storm of omni-casting for many' to reach your target audience?

US based transmedia luminary Jeff Gomez, who has worked on 'blockbuster universes' such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Halo and Avatar, shares some of his expertise with Fiona Milburn.

As TV Falls Apart, Tumblr And Twitter Aim To Pick Up The Pieces | TechCrunch

As TV Falls Apart, Tumblr And Twitter Aim To Pick Up The Pieces | TechCrunch | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

"For years, it’s been said that Internet use would cut into the time U.S. consumers spend watching television. Today, those premonitions are beginning to reach the tipping point. TV ratings have dropped by 50 percent over the last decade. Goldman Sachs recently called the decline “the sharpest pace on record.”

The firm found that ratings in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic – the key group targeted by advertisers – fell by 17 percent last wintercompared with the winter before. ABC, NBC and Fox were most affected, with decreased ad revenues cutting into profits. (Fox had to get distributors to pay higher subscriber fees to pull a profit). But even highest-rated CBS lost 3 percent of its 18-to-49 audience this season, The New York Times reported in April.

Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne had released charts at the beginning of the year showing the ratings drop, claiming declines are a function of income level..."

Siemen's Principles of connectivism:

  • Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.
  • Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources.
  • Learning may reside in non-human appliances.
  • Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known
  • Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning.
  • Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.
  • Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities.
  • Decision-making is itself a learning process. Choosing what to learn and the meaning of incoming information is seen through the lens of a shifting reality. While there is a right answer now, it may be wrong tomorrow due to alterations in the information climate affecting the decision.

Think file transfers aren't art? Think again.

"The project — not to be confused with the DIY cinema groups or Cory Doctorow book – is the work of French digital artist Nicolas Maigret and American software developer Brendan Howell and uses data interception software to pull torrents from the top 100 on the Pirate Bay. The system utilizes an encrypted connection to make the machines used in the installation anonymous and each file used only remains on the computers for a short period of time.

“Following on my previous works (System Introspection/Internet Topography/Flat Earth Society) as well as Brendan’s (The Instant Contemporaneity Device) where the digital and network protocols were considered as the subjects themselves — I really wanted to put the human aspect of the network at the center of the piece,” Maigret said in an email to Wired. “In a sense, the question was not about turning peer-to-peer into art, but about bringing together the conditions to create a concrete aesthetic experience of the internal activity and qualities of P2P file sharing.”...
