Gary Hayes:  "The ‘digital’ brochure-ware website/mobile-app industry is doing fine and dandy – quaint silos inside traditional broadcasters, studios and ad agencies make ‘broadcast interactive’ stuff that is proven standard fare for large sections of the mostly passive audience –  but where are the truly original and/or mature multi platform transmedia services and how will we get there?"

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

Storytelling via the Internet needs a better name.

"Before climbing onto the project, Hollow’s producer Nathaniel Hansenand I had for a couple years asked ourselves a question, roughly:

is it even possible to produce interactive online cinematic content that maintains strong narrative and is as engaging as traditional forms of media?

Our assumption was that “interactive storytelling” on the web is like the wild west of non-fiction filmmaking, with very few rules, artists working to stake their claim, and unlimited virtual land up for grabs.

Yes, the technology is young, but it’s also a blank canvas, with endless possibilities. Further, because the Internet connects both individuals and technology across time and space, there’s a contextualized “hyper” element that no other medium can employ as cosmically among disparate communities and storytellers."

by Robert Hall - web developer for Hollow

Robin Good's insight:

Docubase is a project of the MIT Open Documentary Lab that aims to create a collaborative, participatory community around a growing collection of innovative documentaries curated by experts and outsiders alike.

Documentaries can be searched and sorted easily in a number of ways (most recent, most viewed, alphabetical order / or as a list rather than a mosaic). The interface is slick, colorful and simple to use.

More than 140 documentaries are already available and a selected group of curators has put together a number of publicly available playlists designed aroound key themes connecting these clips.

Playlists: http://docubase.upian.com/playlist/

The curators: http://docubase.upian.com/curator/

A fantastic resource for documentary lovers and a great example of how in an open and participatory project, curation can play a fundamental role.

Free to use.

Interview: Theatre and Transmedia with Michael Beets http://t.co/hz1HECYh7T
Digital Cinema in Transition's insight:

'Michael Beets is an Australian film/theatre director based in Shanghai who has made transmedia stage adaptations of Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit and Theo Van Gogh’s Interview.

@ThisIsTM: What inspired you to take a transmedia approach with your theater productions No Exit and Interview?

It actually began as more of a character study for the actors in ‘No Exit’, and I found that the content they were creating for their character development was enabling me to see the world of the play in a whole new light. I figured why not release this online, and invite the audience to join in on the journey from an earlier point. The ‘No Exit’ platform was more of a blog, and didn’t really allow much opportunity for the audience to get involved. ‘Interview’ was a bit more of a transmedia approach where we spread content through multiple channels such as a website, a Facebook account and an event which all added to the performance....'

Very cool: Aatsinki - interactive documentary on life in an arctic community in Finland

'One year in the life of a family of reindeer herders in Finnish Lapland. A study of hard work, hard earned leisure, and an intricate bond between man and nature.

Brothers Aarne and Lasse Aatsinki are cowboys of the Arctic. Quiet but good natured, dare-devilish but humble, rugged but gentle, and exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to their little slice of wilderness. These men are what John Wayne wanted to be. The brothers, along with their wives and children, live well north of the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, where they are the leaders of a collective of traditional reindeer herders who manage the last group of wild reindeer in all of Finland. Aatsinki follows the family for the span of one year, quietly observing their seasonal routines and the difficulties and joys of a life so closely tied to the land....'

Crowdfunding and crowdsourcing, which entered the lexicon in the late 2000s, are now the default positions for the indie community, with Kickstarter and Indiegogo leading the charge, having successfully funded tens of thousands of film projects between them over the past six years. Seed&Spark upped the crowdfunding/crowdsourcing ante with its launch this year, providing a context not only for fundraising, but also for digital distribution. These platforms have empowered the filmmaking community to forge a cost-effective and cost-efficient covenant with supporters and audiences.
