Crowdfunding & Gamification: What's Next

Crowdfunding & Gamification: What's Next | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

When the lit match of gamificaiton hits the exposed jet fuel of crowdfunding both will feed speed, scale and intelligence into the other. I've read the Forrester report that predicts 80% gamification failure by 2015 and have two thoughts.

1. 80% failure is about the normal Internet marketing "hit" rate.

2. That means 20% are going to win BIG, very big.

The combination of gamification and crowdfunding is more likely than not to be in that 20% winner category.

Eric Jaffe:  "[Psychologist Neil Cohn of University of California at San Diego] says any language has a "holy triumvirate" of elements: expressive form, grammar, and meaning. Comics, he argues, meet all three requirements."

Giuseppe Fattori's curator insight, January 8, 2014 5:16 PM

Language is more than just a series of words strung together. A sentence must have some essential structure, some system of rules governing words and clauses--a grammar. You don't have to be Strunk or White to recognize this system at work; it's automatic in the brain. In Noam Chomsky's famous example, people know that the meaningless sentence "colorless green ideas sleep furiously" is grammatically correct the very first time they see it.

"Ryan Lewis, the producer and co-creator of the Crackle original thriller series "Chosen" starring Milo Ventimiglia, explains how they made a lean action drama for a digital world more used to comedy and short form."

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, December 17, 2013 4:33 AM

Ryan Lewis is one of the co-creators and producers of "Chosen," an original series starring Milo Ventimiglia that airs exclusively in the U.S. on the streaming site Crackle. The show, which is written and directed by Ben Ketai, is a rarity in the digital space outside of Netflix, where comedy and short form still rule the day. "Chosen" is an action series made up of six half-hour episodes that take place at a breakneck pace, with Ventimiglia's character plunged into a mysterious kill-or-be-killed game.

The way we watch TV is changing - we no longer gather in groups to watch our favorite shows, we watch by ourselves, and we do it in large chunks.  TV has gone from being a bonding activity to a solitary indulgence, and the negative conotation that used to come withn that is going away.

Mobile Computing Puts the Location Back in Retail | MIT Technology Review

Mobile Computing Puts the Location Back in Retail | MIT Technology Review | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it
Here’s why location matters again in e-commerce.

By Avi Goldfarb on November 6, 2013Technology is blurring the difference between online and offline retail. For retailing, the key change produced by the Internet is that shopping online spared consumers the economic costs (in time, grief, and gas money) of visiting a store and locating a product. This has been called the “death of distance.” When even isolated individuals can buy anything from a global marketplace, physical location does not confer any commercial advantage, and online merchants might be expected to win every battle.

But an emerging body of economic research shows that there is no independent “online world.” Physical context matters to e-commerce. It shapes our choices and tastes, and it strongly determines what we buy online. With the rise of mobile computing, these local effects matter even more.

Given how easy it is to find and buy books, electronics, and other items online, why do people continue to buy in stores at all? The reason is that online buying generates what economists call disutility: inspecting digital products is difficult, shipping can be slow or expensive, and returning products can be challenging.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, December 18, 2013 1:42 PM

Once again my story colleague in Israel Limor Shiponi has brought us a unique and very insightful article about what happens physically to tellers and audiences when storytelling.

It is rare to find an article that talks about this. And yet it is critical to understand for anyone who is working with stories in the business arena (or any arena actually).

This is where training in performance storytelling can be a huge assist to business storytellers -- because the physical aspects of storytelling and story sharing are part of the training. As is deep listening to the audience, which is another dynamic that is going on the two anecdotes shared.

Oh, and could the photo and quote shared from the Dalai Lama be any more perfect?!

I hope you enjoy this article and gain some insights into the physicality of business storytelling.

I'll need to dig into this post because I sense that understanding issues related to the physical aspects of story telling is what keeps the story powerful.
