Docutopia: Eight New Year’s Wishes for Documentary Film | SUNDANCE NOW

Docutopia: Eight New Year’s Wishes for Documentary Film | SUNDANCE NOW | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

The last year was a very good one for documentary films. By many accounts, 2013 showed how docs have gotten better and more popular, gaining greater legitimacy in the culture at large, and sparking both discussion and political action. But like any art form or industry—or person for that matter—there’s always room for improvement. Docutopia is always striving to make the doc world better, by highlighting what’s good, criticizing what’s bad, and generally drawing more attention to the form.

Observing the Future of Storytelling at the New Frontier Story Lab | Sundance Institute

Observing the Future of Storytelling at the New Frontier Story Lab | Sundance Institute | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

"As Sundance Institute invests in the advancement of story by supporting artists in the New Frontier program, we realized we should also create space for “the observer,” a critical role in innovation. The observer helps to contextualize new things, create language, identify what’s not working, and amplify what resonates.

(...) Samah’s impressive and beautiful video essay affirms the fundamental realities of story that every innovator should embrace."

These Scientists Study Why Internet Stories Go Viral.

These Scientists Study Why Internet Stories Go Viral. | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

'Science confirms what Buzzfeed and Upworthy already know: In the hierarchy of digital contagion content that evokes powerful emotions floats mercilessly to the top....

If the traffic numbers don't already show the wisdom of Zimmerman's approach, the behavioral evidence certainly does. Recent research suggests that emotions hold the secret to viral web content. Articles, posts, or videos that evoke positive emotions have greater viral potential than something that evokes negative feelings, but both do a better job recruiting clicks than neutral content. The finer details tell a similar story: triggering high-arousal emotions, such as anger or humor, is a surer path to click gold than triggering low-arousal ones, such as contentment or sadness....'

Docutopia: Six Great Underseen Docs of 2013 | SUNDANCE NOW

Docutopia: Six Great Underseen Docs of 2013 | SUNDANCE NOW | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

There’s no disputing that documentaries such as The Act of Killing, Stories We Tell, The Square, Let the Fire Burn and After Tiller are among the best films of the year. And yet while year-end critics polls and Oscar short-lists have created consensus around the aforementioned films, many excellent films are being left behind. Polling de-personalizes what should be a very personal experience, turning favorite stories and cinema experiences into mere numeral rankings. Bean counting doesn’t tell us anything about the uniqueness or flavor of the bean.

I love this - there is often a real lack of historical understanding of prior art forms & innovations - this is so true

"KNOW WHAT CAME BEFORE, PART 1

In order to have a voice you have to reach inside you and be completely yourself; but, to paraphrase Stephen King, all the songs have been sung. It helps if you're aware of all the singers that came before you so you can be rooted in tradition and then push it to a new place. That's the only thing we can offer: a new voice in a really, really old tale.

When you trace back fantastic imagery, you're going to stumble upon Marcel Schwob and Odilon Redon; you're going to stumble upon Dadaism, surrealism, symbolism, then you go all the way back to Mesopotamian sculpture and Egyptian murals. That's the great thing about the fantastical narrative--it's been with us since the origins of our culture and that gives you a spring board for not just trying to do what is being done right now...."
