Book publishers turn to cross-media storytelling - Trendscape Blog - Industry Research - About - Canada Media Fund

Book publishers turn to cross-media storytelling - Trendscape Blog - Industry Research - About - Canada Media Fund | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Think about publishing and you think about reading, but not about watching, interacting or playing. Producers tend to seek out publishing companies only when looking to acquire the film or TV rights to a particular book. However, radical changes and exciting developments have been afoot in the publishing world—arguably more so than in any other media industry—and these developments warrant closer scrutiny.

It’s a given now that audiences have more and more control over where, when and how they consume content—be that as readers, viewers or players. With multiple devices available to consumers to access stories, forward-thinking publishers are carving out new opportunities and, consequently, new business models in response to audience expectations.

In 2011, e-book sales surpassed print sales, and this served as a wake-up call to many industry veterans who believed ‘digital’ would never take off in publishing. A similar attitude had been mirrored in other creative industries. Who could have predicted YouTube’s $1.65 billion sale to Google or the spectaculardemise of EMI? Traditional business models had broken and old and new players alike had to be nimble on their feet in order to survive..."

The Digital Rocking Chair's curator insight, January 24, 12:14 PM

Devon Maloney:  "Regardless of how much influence fans may seem to wield or how close the fans and creators may seem in a today’s era of meet-and-greets and panels, a chasm still exists between the people who make shows and the people who ardently love them."

Asil's curator insight, January 26, 11:41 AM

As friendly as that fan-creator relationship may seem, it’s actually a delicate thing. And in the end, Zubernis and Larsen say, it’s mostly artifice. “[The relationship] seems a lot more reciprocal and closer than it is, which is an artifact of the way social media, especially Twitter, makes fans feel,” says Zubernis. “I always stay on Twitter when a Supernatural episode is airing, and the actors and the writers and directors are usually on [Twitter], and I see what it does to fans when somebody answers their tweet. There’s a need, I think, to feel like, ‘They’re listening to me; I’m important.’ That’s a normal psychological response, but it’s not actually true; it’s wishful thinking. It’s a constructed intimacy that’s not really intimate at all.”

Laura Brown's comment, January 26, 1:23 PM
It's all about sales. In the end it is phoney and leaves me feeling it was all meaningless, empty and that I have just been used. Selling autographs is just one tiny step away from the social media puffing up being done these days.

'Gamification': The Way to Revive Reality TV

'Gamification': The Way to Revive Reality TV | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Last year, Asahi TV Corp. and content-fingerprinting specialist Vobile Japan partnered on an unusual experiment for an unscripted primetime series that blurred the line between contestant and audience. When the “Survivor”-themed format featured an on-air personality harpooning fish, viewers were invited to use their smartphones to do some spearing of their own, competing for points by snapping photos of the catch onscreen.

The point was to hook not just fish but also viewers in the treacherous waters of live TV, where ad-skipping DVRs and a sea of competitors make achieving decent ratings increasingly challenging.

It’s an odd example, but one that demonstrates the direction TV networks are going to have to go with reality TV to preserve the prime value of that first window, where most revenue is made. This gamification of reality TV is a trend no one has seen coming, yet it feels inevitable: leveraging second screens to bring back an urgency to watching that first screen...."

David Zax:  '“You’d be hard-pressed to find a young person who asks for an analog radio for Christmas,” admits Joe Harland, with wry British understatement. Harland works for BBC Radio 1 as its “head of visualization." If that sounds like something of an oxymoron for a radio station, well, that’s sort of the point' ...

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, January 28, 2:18 PM

Our brain is the original flight simulator.  Nothing is as powerful as the human brains' ability to visualize and imagine and fill in the storyworld of what we hear.  Years of storytellers have taken us on all kinds of journeys, from Lake Wobegon to War of the Worlds.  Very smart to hear that BBC Radio thinks of listeners as 'viewers.'
