The Creative Media Institute: A New Wave of Documentary Filmmakers (and Ken Burns) Fuels Hampshire College’s Revived Seminar Series « Doc Soup | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

As you read this, there are about a dozen students, mostly undergrads and few older types, who are being subjected to what might be the most dynamic and inspiring documentary tutelage ever mustered in a summer month outside of Sundance, Utah. It’s happening on the leafy hills of the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts under the auspices of The Creative Media Institute at Hampshire College, which has created a four-week summer program being taught by an all-star team of talent.

Are 'Pay What You Want' Film Bundles the Future of Indie Film Distribution? « No Film School

Are 'Pay What You Want' Film Bundles the Future of Indie Film Distribution? « No Film School | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

With technology advancing so quickly, and with the internet’s supreme dominion over our entire lives, distribution doesn’t look anything like it did in the past. In this day and age, independent filmmakers have to find creative ways to not just get their work out there into the ether, but to find an audience somewhere within it. Using VOD platform VHX, film strategy company Bond/360 is now experimenting with a “distribution and filmmaker collaboration” that offers award-winning films in a bundle and allows moviegoers to pick the price they want to pay for it. The directors of Indie Game: The Movie, Sign Painters, and Beauty is Embarrassing weigh in on their experience.

This is already happening with a lot of other independent media industries such as video games, books, and comics through such services as Humble Bundle. It'll be interesting to see how many follow this model of distribution.

Frank Rose on How the Smartphone Ushered In a Golden Age of Journalism | Business | WIRED

Frank Rose on How the Smartphone Ushered In a Golden Age of Journalism | Business | WIRED | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it

'When I first arrived in New York, some time back in the last century, I gazed in awe and fascination at subway riders reading The New York Times. Thanks to a precise and universally adopted method of folding the paper (had it been taught in schools?), they could read it and even turn its pages without thrusting them in anyone else's face. The trick? Folding those big, inky broadsheets into neat little rectangles—roughly the same size, in fact, as an iPad. It's as if they were trying to turn the newspaper into a mobile device. And that, we can now see, is precisely what news is meant for. Today, New York newspaper origami is an all-but-lost art; straphangers have their eyes glued to their smartphones...'

Dear John Grierson: A Postscript to The Story of Film (rough cut) | Sight & Sound

Dear John Grierson: A Postscript to The Story of Film (rough cut) | Sight & Sound | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it
Sight & Sound asked me to make a short film about the wrongs of the documentary canon – which, as I argue in the September 2014 issue, has been essentially Atlanticist for generations now, lacking the bridge-builders between East and West who helped stretch the fiction film canon from the 1950s onwards. When we began cutting the movie, I realised we were going to need a bigger boat, so I am now hoping to turn it into a perhaps three-hour postscript to my 15-hour The Story of Film: An Odyssey.

“Transparency benefits everybody.”

That’s Joe Swanberg, whose recommended Happy Christmasopens today, talking about distribution dealmaking, but he might just as well have been talking about all aspects of his career and financial life. Indeed, Swanberg is nothing but transparent in this long interview with producer, director and ArtHome founder Esther Robinson focused specifically on making a living as a writer/director — precisely the subject most directors won’t issue a comment on.

"The piece was about how you could be an Oscar-nominated filmmaker everyone thinks is mega-successful but you really took that call from the Academy while working your day job at Home Depot. Last issue she wrote "Cash Poor, Creativity Rich," about adapting to an economic environment where there's no money. This issue she followed up with the filmmakers in that "Glamorous Life" piece to find out how their lives, artistic priorities and financial plans have changed."

Comic-Con Delivers Fan-tastic Celebration of Digital - VideoInk

Comic-Con Delivers Fan-tastic Celebration of Digital - VideoInk | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it
San Diego Comic-Con 2014 is in the books, but here is what the digital side of the entertainment world did during the industry's biggest annual event.

As VideoInk’s resident pop culture guru, there was little question that I was going to attend the revered San Diego Comic-Con. A behemoth of geek culture, SDCC is an unapologetic, five-day celebration of fandom that allows devotees to immerse themselves in what they hold so dear.

As such, this unbridled enthusiasm also applies to aspects of the digital space. When I wasn’t schilling my own films or spotting stormtroopers mingling with Sailor Scouts, I kept my eyes open for all the digital world had to offer Comic-Con, and I’m proud to say there was plenty. Beyond simply spotting the likes of iJustine, Khail Anonymous, Shane Dawson, and Rooster Teeth in the crowd, here’s what else the digital world had up its sleeve at SDCC...'
