Compact Camera, Serious Sensor: Fujifilm X100S, Nikon Coolpix A, and Ricoh GR Roundup

Compact Camera, Serious Sensor: Fujifilm X100S, Nikon Coolpix A, and Ricoh GR Roundup | Ricoh GR | Scoop.it

Just a few short years ago, there were generally two groups of cameras: Small cameras with small sensors, and large cameras with larger sensors. No matter what you tried to do, the best you could do if you wanted a small camera with a large sensor was to buy a small SLR and stick some small lenses on it. Then Sigma came up with their good but flawed DP1 along with Olympus and Panasonic with the mirrorless system cameras, and now we are lousy with small cameras with large sensors. This area is now gaining ground, and here in this shootout, we take a look at the three main contenders of 2013: The Fujifilm X100S, the Nikon Coolpix A, and the Ricoh GR. All pack APS-C sized sensors with a fixed lens, and are priced at about US$800 to US$1200, making them pretty close on paper.

This review will be published into two parts, due to the length of it. We will update this space with the link to part two when it is published. For now, here is part one!

No Fuji X-Pro 1, sorry. Yes Ricoh GR. I'll keep trying though.

No Fuji X-Pro 1, sorry. Yes Ricoh GR. I'll keep trying though. | Ricoh GR | Scoop.it

The X100s is my second favourite camera ever, my first is the Ricoh GR.

Because there are other cameras out there, I feel inclined to try them. The Fuji X-Pro 1 is  a bit old now but it looks and feels older, like a ‘proper’ camera. Lenses like the XF35mm are fantastic, the bokeh is great and it feels fun to use – really feels like you’re taking a picture. Like the Audi ad, or Volkswagen where they shut the door and the clunk is just right – that’s Fuji. They’ve got it, and I really wanted to be amazed by the X-pro 1 like I nearly was by the X100s.

The Ricoh GR is just a little black camera, same as all little black cameras. It’s a little black camera I’m trying hard to beat, and I don’t like being losing. It’s half the price of the X-Pro 1 with XF 35mm lens. It doesn’t require a bag or a filter or a strap. It doesn’t have a viewfinder (which isn’t a plus point).

The Ricoh GR Camera Review - The new large sensor GR arrives! | Ricoh GR | Scoop.it

Isn’t it nice when you have a camera that is small, well made, easy to use, and gives you superb quality out of the box? A camera with accurate colors, good AWB performance and nice high ISO. How about really nice and hassle free out of camera B&W for those times you want to shut out all of the color in the world. If a camera had all of this, along with a nice big fat APS-C sensor and decent Autofocus with a fast-ish wide angle lens built in I think many of us would jump in! Funny enough, it is usually NOT the big expensive cameras that give us all of this hassle free performance. Nope, this all comes from a camera coming in at $799, and let me tell you, it is a superb camera and tag along companion for your day to day life.

Ricoh GR, my other Point and Shoot... | Ricoh GR | Scoop.it

So another point and shoot just got added to the stable.

After playing around with a series of film camera, I am back running digitals after a series of less than satisfactory incidents with 20 rolls of Fujifilm slides - enough was enough.

The journey started off with the D800E and then the Sigma DP2 Merrill and finally the Ricoh GR to wrap up (hopefully) the revamp of my photography arsenal.

I hope this post will benefit some people particularly Sigma DP2 Merrill users who are stuck at the 45mm focal length and is presently looking for a wider alternative.

Ricoh GR Review

Ricoh had a reputation for producing superb 35mm film compact cameras such as the GR I and GR21 that found favour with enthusiast photographers. However, despite producing high quality images, the company's digital compact cameras such as the Ricoh GR II and Ricoh GR IV haven't really attracted the same attention.

The new Ricoh GR, however, could be about to change all that, because its 16.2 million pixel sensor is an APS-C format device rather than a 1/1.7-inch unit as is found in the Ricoh GR IV.

Here Angela Nicholson takes a look at what the new GR has to offer. For more information and sample images check out http://www.techradar.com/reviews/came...

Review of the Ricoh GR Digital (GRD V) for Street Photography — Eric Kim Street Photography

Review of the Ricoh GR Digital (GRD V) for Street Photography — Eric Kim Street Photography | Ricoh GR | Scoop.it

Disclaimer: I have been provided a Ricoh GRD V (no strings attached) from Pentax-Ricoh. However I will try to keep this review as un-biased as possible.

Disclaimer aside, I think this is currently hands-down the best bang-for-the-buck digital camera for street photography currently out there right now (will release soon for ~800 USD). I love the compact size, the superb image quality and high-ISO performance, as well as the ergonomics and handling. It has been traveling with me alongside my Leica MP as a second shooter — and the camera seriously kicks ass.

While I still prefer shooting with film at the end of the day, it is an amazing camera and I highly recommend it to all street photographers who want a smaller alternative. Keep reading for more of my thoughts on the camera.
