‘Derek’ Stars Ricky Gervais as a Nursing Home Volunteer

‘Derek’ Stars Ricky Gervais as a Nursing Home Volunteer | Ricky Gervais | Scoop.it
Ricky Gervais wrote, directed and stars in “Derek,” a show about a volunteer in a small British nursing home, streaming on Netflix.
Jasdeep Singh's insight:

Another show by Gervais that showcases his talents as an actor, director, and writer. Another one of his shows, mockumentary style. In this one Ricky stars as Derek. A volunteer in a small British nursing home. Derek is different. It is questioned through out the series if he is mentally challanged. He is a kind hearted volunteer with nothing but good thoughts running through his mind. This show stands out from all of his other work because it isnt the usual foul mouthed offensive Ricky Gervais. This show is more about kind deeds, and very sympathetic emotional moments. I first saw this show and was not very fond of it because i expected it to be a comedy based on the fact that it is Ricky Gervais. Once you can get past the thought of it being funny, the show is actually very moving and touching.

The Office (TV Series 2001–2003) | Ricky Gervais | Scoop.it
With Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook, Lucy Davis. The story of an office that faces closure when the company decides to downsize its branches.
Jasdeep Singh's insight:

As mentioned in the biography, The office was the show that made Ricky Gervais a house hold name. The show was nominated for 37 awards! Yes, 37. Out of those 37 nominations, the series took home 23 awards. Keep in mind the show only ran for 2 seasons. Ricky Gervais had created, writtend, directed and starred in this british sitcom. It was filmed as a "mockumentary." Mockumentary is the mashup of two words, mock and documentary. The camera is acknowledged throughout the show, and many scenes involve characters directly speaking to the camera as if they were being interviewed. This show was copied by several different countries in several different languages around the world. The office was a global success. It also paved the way for other mockumenty style shows such as parks and recreations. Parks and Rec was originally started as a spinoff of the office but during production was made into a stand alone show.

UPDATE III: The Hollywood Foreign Press issued a statement on Gervais' performance (via EW): "We loved the show.
Jasdeep Singh's insight:

Another one of Gervais' most controversial moments. He was chosen as the host of the Golden Globes, and it was one of the most controversial shows. As mentioned in the article he called out many actors and actoresses, and many believed he crossed a line with his jokes. He held nothing back and once again spoke what was on his mind. Qualities he also depicts throught out his shows and movies. After this performance Ricky Gervais was banned from ever hosting or being nominated for the Golden Globes again. He was quoted as saying he loves the fact that every year for 3 hours, hollywood is scared sh**less of him.

Jasdeep Singh's insight:

This scoop discusses the origins of Ricky Gervais. It also talks about his upbringing, his work and his views.  He is a man of many talents including writing, directing, producing, acting and singing. He is most famously known for being the creator of The Office, the UK and US version. The Office was the show that had launched his career into Stardom. His other works include Ghosttown, The Invention of Lying (one of my favorite movies), Derek (TV) and more. He is a very controversial person because he does not hold his tongue. That's one of the reasons his work is so interesting to me because he touches on sensitive subjects such as religion and sexuality. He speaks his mind and voices his opinions very strongly!

The Invention of Lying (2009)

The Invention of Lying (2009) | Ricky Gervais | Scoop.it
Directed by Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson. With Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K.. A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.
Jasdeep Singh's insight:

The Invention of Lying is a movie that Ricky Gervais wrote, directing and starred in. It follows a man named Mark Bellison, played by Ricky Gervais. Mark is an average guy who is down on his luck but that all changed one day when something triggered in his brain and he accidentally told the first lie in human history. Before the lie Mark tells, there is no such thing as lying in the universe. Its a comedic movie that touches on the very controversial topic of religion and of "the man in the sky." Mark's mom is on her deathbed and very scared, so in order to calm her down he lied to her about this imaginary place people go when the die. Ricky Gervais has stated, publicly on man occasions, that he is a proud Athiest. He channels that through this movie. This is roughly a comedic view on how he believes religion started. It was told as a lie, a good lie, to get people to perform good deeds. It is a myth, that we as a society, never grew out of. This is one of my favorite movies because it channels the same opinions as me and it is a one of a kind movie.

Ricky Gervais blasts Hollywood films and says makers 'lack ambition'
Mirror.co.uk
Ricky Gervais has risked clashing with Hollywood stars by claiming most films are rubbish and the makers “don't give a s**t”.
Jasdeep Singh's insight:

This scoop right here shows the values that Ricky Gervais has that i admire. Making movies shows or anything else isnt mainly about the money for him. As he discusses in the article, he could have continued his British version of The Office and made millions more, but he cancelled after 2 years, because he knew that the show was at its peak and could only go down from there. He cancelled it because he did not want to dissapoint fans. Thats what he feels like Hollywood does. The industry makes these cheap movies just to make money with no real story basis, good acting. Just cheap laughs. Movies are not unique anymore, and most of them are so predictable. Another one of the reasons to admire Ricky Gervais, because he calls it like he sees it. He isnt afraid to voice his opinion as i've mentioned before. More directors and actors with this attitude can only improve the quality and content of films.
