I thought this was a good visual to demonstrate how you cannot just take a global map and just flatten it. You do not get the same scale and accurate description of the globe. While it may show multiple of the land features, the land features get distorted.

Seeing a human face spread out this way makes me now realize that a 2-D map is not a real interpretation of the world. But at the same time this is more of a strange picture than when a globe is flattened out. I guess we are more used to seeing a globe flattened out.

On a personal note, my very first globe and National Geographic magazines were given to me by my grandparents who noticed I had an affinity for all things geographic. They lived just outside Yosemite Park and they made sure I explored it frequently while I was growing up so I have a soft spot for this particular national park. My grandmother informed me that El Capitan was the largest single piece of granite on Earth and my skeptical 3rd grade mind replied, "Is that a fact or an opinion?" Informal geographic education had a greater impact on my educational path than the formal K-12 curriculum. Without those simple nudges, I doubt I would be a geographer today. Si el Prezi es una bona eina de presentació, i des del principi ha millorat molt, cada vegada es més senzilla. Delete the scoop?

I love the this video that Google released exactly one year ago. Instead of sharing it when I initially discovered this fantastic retro resource, I thought that it would only be fitting to share this on the one-year anniversary of its public release. If you need some context to understand the purpose of this technological shift, watch this video. And please try the trial version; this is version 2.0 if I'm not mistaken.
