Reducing China’s wildlife trade

Reducing China’s wildlife trade | Rhino poaching | Scoop.it

China is one of the world’s largest consumers of wildlife products, from elephant ivory to shark fin, from rhino horn to pangolin scale.

Since IFAW established a Beijing office in 1997, we have committed to reducing demand in China for wildlife products. Our Chinese leadership and staff provide essential insight into Chinese society that results in locally relevant, effective initiatives to reduce consumption and trade of wildlife products both online and offline....

Alternatives to rhino horn - The Journal of Chinese Medicine | Rhino poaching | Scoop.it

Rhinoceros horns, unlike those of other horned mammals, consist principally of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails, with dense mineral deposits at the centre [1]. Pharmacological testing at Hoffmann La Roche for IUCN and WWF in1983 published in The Environmentalist concluded that “rhino horn, like fingernails, is made of agglutinated hair and has no analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmolytic nor diuretic properties. No bactericidal effect could be found against suppuration and intestinal bacteria. Essentially, ingesting rhino horn is the same as chewing your own fingernails.” [2]

The mother of this baby rhino was shot by poachers. Now it lives in a guesthouse in Zimbabwae which is run by husband and wife team Roger and Anne Whittall. Five years after his adoption, Jimmy, named after Roger’s late father, is free to come and go as he pleases but still visits Anne, 71, regularly by popping his head through the open kitchen window. A family friend said about the rhino, “There’s no doubt that Jimmy sees Anne as his mother.” Which isn’t surprising seeing as Anne bottle-fed him five or six times a day as a youngster.

Stop Burning Rain Forests for Palm Oil: Scientific American

Stop Burning Rain Forests for Palm Oil: Scientific American | Rhino poaching | Scoop.it

December 7, 2012 - Scientific American

The world's growing appetite for cheap palm oil is destroying rain forests and amplifying climate change...

Palm oil exports bring Indonesia and neighboring Malaysia $40 billion a year.Yet this profit comes at a terrible toll. Converting forests into oil palm plantations destroys the home of not only orangutans but also such critically endangered creatures as the Sumatran tiger and the Sumatran rhino.

Moreover, the denuding of this land through logging and burning releases large quantities of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Much of this forest sits on peatland, the draining and burning of which releases even more carbon dioxide than the clearing of the overlying trees does....  http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=stop-burning-rain-forests-for-palm-oil

Jonathan Geothermal's curator insight, July 5, 2013 1:20 AM

Palm oil is increasingly getting attention for being just as destructive to Indonesia's environment and international reputation as the country's coal industry. One more reason to hope Jero Wacik is serious about finally unlocking some of the country's clean energy potential during his time as Energy Minister.
