Rhino poaching statistics released today by the South African government reveal that a record 668 rhinos were killed across the country in 2012, an increase of nearly 50 per cent from the 448 rhinos lost to poachers in 2011.

"A team deployed from the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police nabbed two persons with a rhino horn in Sunsari district.

 

According to the Police, the arrestees include Rajan Prasad Nepal (35) and Amar Mahato of Morang district."

"Meanwhile, a one-horned rhino has been battling for life in Orang National Park after sustaining bullet injuries. Forest staff said poachers attacked the rhino when it strayed out of the park on Monday night. "The rhino was attacked by a group of poachers in the park early on Tuesday. According to the reports received from witnesses, a bullet hit the animal. But it is reported to be alive and battling for life," said a forest official. He added that the poachers managed to flee from the park before the authorities launched a search operation."

Three rhinos have been poached and one KWS ranger has been shot in the first days of 2013 already. In addition, KWS officials estimate they are losing one to two elephants a day to poachers. 

 

Also, The African Environmental Film Foundation will debut their film "White Gold" at the CITES March 2013 conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

"Three rhinos have been killed and their horns hacked off in two separate incidents in Nanyuki over the last few days. One female black rhino was killed at the Ol Jogi Ranch on Monday. She left behind a calf which is reportedly too young to survive on its own.

 

In the other incident, a white rhino and her calf were killed in Solio Ranch on the morning of New Year's Day. "Gunshots were heard at about 2am which Kenya Wildlife Service rangers responded to. A confrontation between the rangers and the poachers ensued." confirmed Aggrey Maumo, the KWS assistant director in charge of the Mt Kenya region."

Many proposed solutions have surfaced. This may not be an exhaustive list. Some may be mutually exclusive, some illegal or otherwise not feasible. However, with some of these coming together in an organized fashion who knows what good could be done to stop the illegal trade...
