Quest 2-5

Quest 2-5 | Rhiannon's OHS | Scoop.it
Rhiannon Phillips's insight:

Steve- Truss Construction:

Heavy lifting of timber every shift, majority of the time lifting by him self 100kg trusses daily. Which includes lifting and shifting all the equipment and materials required to construct a truss. This causes strain on back and shoulder muscles.

Timber has to be cut to certain measurements for different sized trusses. This requires using a saw, this is done before constructing the actual truss itself. Safety equipment needs to be used during these process such as eye google to ensure saw dust stays out of the workers eyes.

Weather can also effect the workers if it's a hot day and the with no air conditioning with minimal fans will cause the employees to sweat. Without appropriate hydration levels during these times can make workers dehydrated.

Quest 2-3

Quest 2-3 | Rhiannon's OHS | Scoop.it
Rhiannon Phillips's insight:

Tanya- Westpac/ Teller:

Main priority of a teller is to serve customers, Tanya spends her shift dealing with customers which includes abusive customers. This can cause stress on all employees which is a daily hazard.

Handling large quantities of money, speaking with Tanya due to constantly handling and counting money her hands become dry and requires constant moisturising. Numerous forms of bacteria may be on money, if Tanya is not careful and continuously washing or sanitising her hands she may ingest these bacteria which with prolonged exposure could cause illness.

Mainly sitting in front of a computer screen raises a risk for eye strain and saw back from bad posture from sitting at a desk looking at a computer that is not at the right height.

Other possible hazards found in this work place could include dust inhalation from air being recycled through air con daily, slips and trips (over cords/papers/rubbish) and strains from lifting money and paper reams.

Quest 2-1

Quest 2-1 | Rhiannon's OHS | Scoop.it
Rhiannon Phillips's insight:

Jessica- Woolworths/ Deli Assistant:
Jessica job requires serving customers in cold environment for the entire shift. There is no  equipment provided to keep warm in this department. From constantly handling products that are required  to be colder than 5 degrees it  could possibly effect her hands.

In her job she is also required  to  push heavy trolleys of stock from the back dock to the deli,  lift heavy boxes up to 12kg of product daily. All of these manual handling  issues can cause back, arms and shoulder  strain.

Slicing meats and handling knifes are a large requirement  during the shift, this leaves her at risk of easily cutting herself. Mesh gloves  should be warn constantly when handling this equipment.

Electrical Hazards | Office Environment | Office Safety

Offices are often considered to be a safer work environment, compared to construction, mining, fire fighting etc. However this should not stop people in the office from being aware of the safety hazards which may exist. One of these is electricity.

OHS Electrical's curator insight, July 21, 2015 8:07 PM

Before reading this article I did not realize that so many hazards existed in the office; however, with some thought I now realize that hazards are everywhere.  Even those places that would generally be considered ‘safe’, hazards exist and should be thought about, spotted, risks assessed and controls identified and put into place to make areas as safe as possible.

Quest 2-4

Quest 2-4 | Rhiannon's OHS | Scoop.it
Rhiannon Phillips's insight:

John- Bus Company Manager:

Working both in an office and in the work yard has its benefit of not being stuck doing one task in one position for the shift. However sitting at a desk in front of computers causes eye strain and back pains. Walking around the yard poses risk of buses reversing into employees and exposure to sun and diesel fumes ( fuel pump on site).

Stress from complaining customers visiting the office and calling the office, also the stress to direct numerous buses and bus drivers including brake downs and repairs.
