The process of designing any sort of human experience, regardless of purpose or platform, is centered around reaching a desired outcome, ideally with as little fuss and as much joy as possible.

The purpose of an experience and the platform on which the experience takes place will vary: purchasing a plane ticket on a tablet to vacation, enjoying a musical performance in a theater, or learning to code in a classroom. Although each of these experiences require their own unique methods and frameworks, the elements that should be taken into consideration during the design process remain mostly the same.

 

As a learning experience designer, you should focus your time and attention during the strategy plane on identifying the gaps that exist between the learner and his/her desired outcome. Those gaps exist due to a lack of the following:

Knowledge: Do learners lack the proper information to complete a task?Skill: Do they have all of the right information but lack the ability to translate that knowledge into action that could be applied to a given situation?Confidence: Are they able to demonstrate or apply the skill, but do they hesitate or refuse to apply it?Motivation: Are they able to demonstrate or apply the skill confidently but just don’t want to do it?Access: Do they have all of the above but lack the proper tools or resources to complete a task?

Once you are able to properly identify the gaps that cause learners to struggle, you must design a solution that effectively addresses those gaps.

Just like any experiences, learning experiences also need to well designed. After deciding on outcome to be achieved of learning particular course (learning outcome), gaps to reaching the outcome should be identified at requirement plane, strategy plane, interaction plane and sensory plane. In course of doing so, gaps in knowledge, skills, confidence, motivation and access that learners may have should be addressed through course delivery, that careful planning be made through the planning, determination of objectives, implementation and evaluation stage of curriculum.

What are the Biggest Mistakes Teachers Make When Integrating Technology into the Classroom?

 

The word “mistake” is a harsh word. It implies flaws, pointing fingers, errors in judgement, something wrong and possibly even a dead end. I would rather think or connect the word “mistake” to first steps, stepping stones, experimentation and exploration. With that being said, those “first steps” or that exploration cannot become a routine cemented in stone how technology is being used in the classroom. Stepping stones are meant to lead to something else.

 

For the sake of the prompt given, here are my top 5 “Mistakes” (in no particular order) which I  see, read and hear about as I travel the world to learn and work with schools, teachers and students:

 

- Technology being used to substitute an analog activity


- Technology use being seen as an add-on to allow students to use devices, the Internet, a program or an app as a reward, for entertainment, as a time filler for students who finish early


- Technology use as a separate subject area


- Technology as a $1000 pencil initiative


- Technology seen as the solution to motivate and engage students

- Technologie utilisée pour substituer une activité analogique. (NDLR: Quoiqu'il faille bien commencer quelque part!)
- Utilisation de la technologie considérée comme un add-on pour permettre aux étudiants d'utiliser des dispositifs, l'Internet, un programme ou une application comme une récompense, pour le divertissement, comme un passe-temps pour les étudiants qui terminent plus tôt.
- Utilisation de la technologie comme un sujet distinct du cours.
- La technologie comme un crayon à € 1000.
- Technologie vu comme la solution pour motiver et engager les élèves.

Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.Courage to defend their own criteria against others.Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

So many students simply want the answer...no thinking involved, the easy way. We are doing our youth a tremendous injustice not emphasizing both the metacognitive and critical thinking processes. They need to be able to explore a problem, then analyze, explain, and evaluate it in order to survive as adults.
