It's Not About the Device, It's About What You Do With It (EdSurge News) | Rethinking how Teachers Teach and Students Learn | Scoop.it
Education technology devices have become symbolic of the efforts to transform US education through blended and personalized learning--and desktops, laptops, and tablets are quickly becoming ubiquitous in education.

Devices are crucial as a conduit for content; however, they do not directly improve learning outcomes.
These tangible examples are, with the exception of few dazzling products, nearly indistinguishable. When we are shown images of technology enhancing education, it is rarely a picture of particular software or data systems--it is a student with a device.

Devices are crucial as a conduit for content; however, they do not directly improve learning outcomes.

AR has the potential to play the same role in our lives as mobile phones with hundreds of millions of users. You could wear it anywhere and do anything. Where VR is like wearing a console on your face (Oculus), AR is like wearing a transparent mobile phone on it (Magic Leap, HoloLens).

"This post is not meant to be judgey!  Even the best techie teacher started somewhere and most likely made one of these common mistakes.  I think I made all five during the same lesson when I first started to integrate iPads.

Some really good thoughts! We certainly do need to change the way we use software/apps and allow students to have greater power in deciding which apps to use and how they use them. As teachers, we are not always the expert on how to use apps!

There’s a very easy way to make better use of the iPad in class. Simply become more aware of what you’re using the iPad for when teaching. This is where the SAMR model comes in, something I believe all teachers should be familiar with. The SAMR model is a 4 stage framework, illustrated below by the fantastic Sylvia Duckworth, creator of many great sketch notes.

"The Green Screen App by DoInk is very versatile. I love to think of new ways to use it besides overlaying video captured before green screen. If you create PNGs (images with transparent or empty sections) you can put live video, pre-recorded video, or animations behind the PNG. There are SO many possibilities for creating interactive art and images this way. "

Google Cardboard in Education, VR at its best!

Google Cardboard in Education, VR at its best! | Rethinking how Teachers Teach and Students Learn | Scoop.it
For me, virtual reality has never really taken off, especially in education. It has always promised a lot and there are some fantastic isolated examples of how VR could be used but is yet to burst onto the education scene in a major way. I have used some very cool apps in an educational setting to try VR such Aurasma and Anatomy 4D. Both produce good VR experiences, with Aurasma I had a video of a model answer play when the iPad was placed over the exam question and with Anatomy 4D I found you could really get to grips with the various systems of the human body. But both only had specific times when they could be used. I really want something that I can use all the time and have it enhance what I am trying to teach the children.

Keep Your Kids Safe When They’re Using a Smartphone - MakeUseOf.com

Keep Your Kids Safe When They’re Using a Smartphone - MakeUseOf.com | Rethinking how Teachers Teach and Students Learn | Scoop.it

"Nowadays, kids want to use smartphones. Of course, most parents aren’t willing to actually buy their kids a device, but plenty have no problem letting them play with one. Of course, when a child uses a cell phone they can potentially be exposed to all kinds of dangerous things that aren’t meant for young eyes.

But the risks aren’t just for the children, but they can affect you, the parents, too. Kids could make unwanted in-app purchases, make calls to people you don’t want to talk to, they could even share photos you don’t want the world to see, and they can do plenty of other bad things. So what can you do? Check out the infographic below for the answers."

Free Technology for Teachers: Convert PDFs to Google Docs to Differentiate Instructional Materials

Free Technology for Teachers: Convert PDFs to Google Docs to Differentiate Instructional Materials | Rethinking how Teachers Teach and Students Learn | Scoop.it
Recently, we discovered a feature of Google Drive that has changed how we prepare and access materials and resources for our students. As we attempt to make all curricula digital and thus make it available to all students, the idea of using PDFs was always a problem. PDFs are just not editable in most situations, and this was an issue when it came to modifying and differentiating documents. Adobe Acrobat was our “go to” application for this type of conversion, but it was costly and often hard to come by in an educational setting. Note: We still use Adobe Acrobat for complex projects or documents that do not convert well in Google Drive. With the most recent update to Google Drive, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities are better and easier than ever.
