Unveiled in New York during May 2011 with plans for a full launch in Q3 2011, Google Wallet and Google Offers - both powered by near-field communication (NFC) technology - are giving users of Android smartphones the capability to pay for things in-store simply by scanning their phone at the till terminal. Google Wallet will first launch in New York and San Francisco, while Google Offers - a daily discount sent to the user's phone and linked to their purchase history - will begin in both these cities as well as Portland. Google has already made partnerships with several banks and retailers to launch the service which will be available on Google's Android-based Nexus S smartphone. Payments will be processed via MasterCard's PayPass system.
