Deloitte predicts rise in value of Christmas retail

Business advisory firm Deloitte predicts the value of retail spending in the UK will increase by 1% year on year this Christmas.

This increase will take the value of retail sales in the critical month of December just beyond £37billion, as consumers continue to show resilience in the face of testing economic conditions.

However, Deloitte forecasts that the retail industry is unlikely to see any growth at all in 2011, with the possibility of falling sales values a real risk.

Richard Hyman, Strategic Retail Adviser to Deloitte, said: "A 1% increase in retail sales this Christmas caps a remarkable year for UK retail.

Debenhams autumn/winter ad campaign is getting a mobile boost, with the retailer’s print adverts being brought to life when a smartphone or tablet is pointed at them.

Using Aurasma augmented reality technology – which can be downloaded as an app on to devices – consumers who point an Aurasma-enabled smartphone or tablet at a Debenhams print ad will see the retailer’s new television commercial spring to life on their screens. It will then link the viewer to Debenhams’ website.
