Retail Clinics: Walgreens ‘Takes Care’ of You

Retail Clinics: Walgreens ‘Takes Care’ of You | retail trends | Scoop.it

Walgreens embarked on a new, comprehensive store rebranding initiative in the end of 2011. At that time, the health & beauty retailer operated a little more than 350 retail clinics in its stores, with the goal of being able to provide lower-cost medical care and treatment to its customers than is available through primary care physicians.

The Strategy

"Walgreens store re-branding initiative is centered on the fulfillment of two goals: (1) owning the relationship on health & wellness as more and more retailers (for example: Whole Foods, Walmart, and Kroger) roll out strategies to meet the growing demand for these services; and (2) bringing theconvenience of a one-stop-shop to its customers in the form of quality health care, access to prescription drugs, OTC pharmaceuticals, beauty products, and even ready-to-eat food and fresh produce!  Parents of more than 2-3 children will find that the convenience of having this quality health care available at their local store trumps the alternative of visiting a primary care physician’s office when a child is sick. Stop & Shop’s Curbside Pick-Up vs. USA Retail Drive-Through

Stop & Shop’s Curbside Pick-Up vs. USA Retail Drive-Through | retail trends | Scoop.it

The concept of the drive-thru in retail has fully blossomed in Europe, but the service is still gaining traction and awareness among US consumers.

This year Stop & Shop unveiled a model that has a lot of similarities to the successful drive-through services being offered by retailers like E. Leclerc, Intermarche, and Auchan in France. Stop & Shop, subsidiary of Amsterdam based Ahold, recently unveiled its new service at a store in Chelmsford, MA.

A Look Inside Walmart’s Urban 90 Supercenter | InStore Trends

A Look Inside Walmart’s Urban 90 Supercenter | InStore Trends | retail trends | Scoop.it

Walmart recently opened a new small format supercenter prototype in Toronto, Canada in late January. The 90,000 square foot store, commonly known as the Urban 90 format, is dramatically smaller than the traditional 200,000 square foot supercenter and takes only 34 weeks to build, compared to the typical 52 weeks for the typical store. This launch marks another major milestone in Walmart’s push to smaller and more proximity-based stores, after its opening of the Express format last summer. This concept is not unique, as other big box retailers are testing similar small formats, including Target’s “City Target”, set to launch five stores this year (previously highlighted on instoretrends). How has Walmart adapted its big box to this more limited footprint?

What’s most interesting about the retailer, however, is that their gross margins actually increase as the stores age & they have never had a negative comp store sales space since their first store opened in 2000!

Retailers to the Health Care Rescue | InStore Trends | retail trends | Scoop.it

There has been a lot of discussion of the role and responsibility of retailers in the obesity crisis. Does Walmart make unhealthy food too cheap? Are American portions too big? Should retailers be responsible for policing ingredients to discourage unhealthy foods?

Retail Clinics: Walmart’s Model is Unlike Any Other

Retail Clinics: Walmart’s Model is Unlike Any Other | retail trends | Scoop.it

There are currently 158 clinics in Walmart’s stores in 27 US states. Those 158 clinics are operated by more than 60 independent health providers. The majority of the independent operators manage between 1-2 Walmart Clinics, however, some (like: St. Vincent Health System, Sisters of Mercy Health System, and CareExpress Health System, as well as a handful of others) operate just 4 Walmart Clinics.
