A Look Inside Walmart’s Urban 90 Supercenter | InStore Trends

A Look Inside Walmart’s Urban 90 Supercenter | InStore Trends | Featured Research - RetailNet Group | Scoop.it

Walmart recently opened a new small format supercenter prototype in Toronto, Canada in late January. The 90,000 square foot store, commonly known as the Urban 90 format, is dramatically smaller than the traditional 200,000 square foot supercenter and takes only 34 weeks to build, compared to the typical 52 weeks for the typical store. This launch marks another major milestone in Walmart’s push to smaller and more proximity-based stores, after its opening of the Express format last summer. This concept is not unique, as other big box retailers are testing similar small formats, including Target’s “City Target”, set to launch five stores this year (previously highlighted on instoretrends). How has Walmart adapted its big box to this more limited footprint?

Russia Regulations on Informal Market

Russia Regulations on Informal Market | Featured Research - RetailNet Group | Scoop.it

The ongoing regulation of the Russian retail landscape will benefit modern retailers, as recent regulations could force many informal retailers to close. The Russian government recently passed a law stating that consumers will no longer be able to purchase alcohol at kiosks. As the largest alcohol-consuming nation in the world, analysts predict that rather than curbing their alcohol intake, consumers will simply change the point of purchase. Modern retailers could see a dramatic increase in both the number of shoppers, and spend in their stores, as these informal kiosks account for about a third of Russia’s beer sales, or $6 billion dollars. Further, the government recently has increased the standards for open-air markets, leading to the closure of about 19 such markets this year in Moscow alone.

Walgreens embarked on a new, comprehensive store rebranding initiative in the end of 2011. The Strategy

"Walgreens store re-branding initiative is centered on the fulfillment of two goals: (1) owning the relationship on health & wellness as more and more retailers (for example: Whole Foods, Walmart, and Kroger) roll out strategies to meet the growing demand for these services; and (2) bringing theconvenience of a one-stop-shop to its customers in the form of quality health care, access to prescription drugs, OTC pharmaceuticals, beauty products, and even ready-to-eat food and fresh produce!  Parents of more than 2-3 children will find that the convenience of having this quality health care available at their local store trumps the alternative of visiting a primary care physician’s office when a child is sick.
